All of us at Slam x Hype crew have been very busy for the past few months with a very dear project for us – Slam X Hype x Michael Lau exclusive collaboration toy in all black extra desirable colorway that is part of Mr.Lau’s Gardener 10th anniversary craze that has taken over Los Angeles. The all black extra fancy edition of Michael Lau’s take on Gardener meets Slam X Hype is what it’s all about and we are truly humbled and thrilled to be a part of something of this magnitude. The toy is limited edition of only 100 pieces and shows off our identity and what we are all about as well Michael’s creative vision along with some special culturally relevant references for you. Nike Sportswear and Lance Armstrong Present “Stages” – A Global Art Exhibit and Sale

Nike Sportswear has just announced an exciting initiative with Lance Armstrong in which the two will team up to present Stages, which launches this Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the Montalbán Theater. This new project will see participation from more than 20 of today’s most exciting and prominent artists who have put their great talent to use to create art work for an exhibition that will eventually be put up for sale to support the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF).

As part of the festivities on Saturday, a 2.2 mile bike ride will take place with 700 cycling enthusiasts and it will be led by none other than Armstrong himself. The bike ride will begin at the Children’s Hospital in Hollywood and it will end at the Montalbán Theater where guests will be treated to an unveiling of a new collection of Nike Sportswear apparel and footwear designed to celebrate human potential and overcoming adversity. Having already previewed this collection from Dr Romanelli entitled “Camp Romanelli” that was created for Barney’s in Japan, we can give you the complete look. Having derived the collection from vintage Boy Scout garments and materials the collection has a complete outcome full of history and reference. With each piece telling a story, such is the effect of Dr Romanelli’s hard work and effort put into crafting each piece. Suite For Ma Dukes at Cal State Los Angeles Coverage

Last Sunday Mochilla hosted Suite For Ma Dukes at Cal State Los Angeles, which is part of the V-tech/ Mochilla Timeless concert series. Suite for Ma Dukes was concert in tribute to the late amazing producer J Dilla.

The evening opened up with a set by DJ House Shoes playing some classic J Dilla tracks along with voice messages from Erkah Badu, ?uestlove and J Dilla. Next up was a set by J Rocc from the World Famous Beat Junkies who mixed up old and unreleased J Dilla beats and tracks.

The main event of the evening was Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and his 40-piece orchestra who did an unbelievable job of re-bringing to life the famous hiphop music that J Dilla had originally created to be heard through speakers and headphones. To add to this already wonderful sound, Bilal was brought on stage to perform “Reminisce.” For the grand finale of the evening (which you can watch below), Posdonous of De La Soul and Talib Kweli performed “Stakes Is High” to which to whole crowed responded too with an amazing energy.

An EP by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and the Suite For Ma Dukes Orchestra of which we mentioned earlier (link to previous post) can be bought on iTunes features some of the tracks that were played during the evening.

The Suite For Ma Dukes event not only paid a beautiful tribute to J Dilla and his amazing work, it also opened the eyes and ears to a lot of people in showing that hiphop is a genre that can be played everywhere from car stereos, headphones in a train or bus to even concert venues with a conductors with a live orchestra.

Bill McMullen’s ‘Hype, Hustle, Rip-Off’ Exhibition

Yet another exciting art show opening at The Constant Gallery in Los Angeles. This time around, witty and multi-talented New Yorker Bill McMullen–who is responsible for more recognizable and iconic imagery than most realize. His one man show “Hype, Hustle, Rip-Off ” is a multimedia collection of paintings, wooden “objects”, sculptures and concept pieces based on the current events, commentaries on todays culture of Hype, Hustle, (and yes) Rip- Off, mixed with clever observations, a love of guns, Star Wars, and hip-hop. The opening reception took place on Saturday, February 21st, drawing flocks of hipsters, collectors, art aficionados, artists and celebrities.

The crowd was greeted in front of the gallery by a professional sign spinner that spun a large arrow that read “Hype” in front of the gallery’s custom neon sign that was made specifically for this exhibit.
In the gallery’s front courtyard, guests approach a giant basketball backboard in the shape of a fist, complete with a hoop. As one walks into the crowded installation space, the first thing noticed is a florescent pedestal with “Billions McMillons” wooden slabs of faux money, as well as large art pieces on the walls, wooden sculptures, paintings, and an R2D2 inspired boom box followed by three life-sized mannequins dressed in custom “brand inspired camo,” complete with machine guns and large, aluminum brand inspired camo backdrops hanging from the ceiling. Next to this installation was a large wooden painting with a repetition of the word “Destroy.” It seems that the attendees were shocked and awed by the art but most people “got” the concepts. Bill McMullen roamed the crowds, along with Adam Yauch from Beastie Boys and actor John C. Reilly, who both were very interested in all of the art. Overall this was yet another very strong opening night at the Constant Gallery that curated fantastic cutting-edge art- definitely worth seeking out.

KAWS “The Long Way Home” at Honor Fraser Recap

KAWS mania has been running rampant the last few days here in Los Angeles to a point where people that have never even set foot through the doors of any galleries felt compelled to see the spectacle first hand. I knew it was going to be insane seeing how everyone’s Twitter “tweets” were all declaring their intentions to check out the show, so I sat this one out so that I could check the show another day sans the massive crowd. Luckily, my friend Keith Marzo of DC Lifestyle was on hand to snap a few images of some of the amazing work that was on display. Chum was in full effect, as well as some Smurf — or rather, “Kurfs” — paintings, colored busts of the artist’s head, and other works were all exhibited, and as expected, they were all long sold out.

Camp Romanelli consists of a reworked , reinterpreted range of Dr Romanelli creations made from vintage Boy Scout materials. The items in the range come from literally over a hundred different Boy Scout collections dating back as early as the 1940’s in the era of Baden Powell who is the founder of the Boy Scouts. In continuation of our 5 Minutes with interview series the focus had shifted to one of hip-hop’s rising starts. From recent XXL Magazine Cover’s deeming him one of the freshman 10 to his recent stint on the set of Honda’s ad compaign featuring his music, Mickey Factz has carved a niche in the music industry few had set out on, while many are traveling today. His unique brand of music mashes to the extreme genre’s of music, creating a sound under the GFC NY moniker that has a lasting appeal for years to come. 5 minutes with Mickey Factz provides the world yet to discover a glimpse into the mind of a man soon to be on the minds of the masses throughout the world.

SLAMXHYPE – Favorite musical memory about the place you were born?
Mickey Factz – Watching dudes battling on the corners of the bronx as a kid in public school. I always thought dudes were fighting when in reality it was just them ciphering. That was one of the best. Outside of that, my father rapping to me as a baby.

SXH – What decade would your music best be suited for?
MF – The teen’s. 2010 – 2020. Ha!

SXH – Best new fashion label?
MF – Brian Wood. Hands down.

SXH – Most inspirational moment to your musical career?
MF – Being on the cover of the XXL. I was one of like 3 artists without a deal on that cover. That meant the world to me. Still does. That brings inspiration to all those seeking a deal.

SXH – If you have 3 albums you could listen to the rest of your life what would those albums be?
MF – Michael Jackson – Bad; John P. Kee – Not Guilty; Mickey Factz – My entire library.

SXH – First thought as you wake up every morning?
MF – Where the hell is my blackberry?!?! I wonder who emailed me.

SXH – Spiritualist or realist?
MF – Spiritualist.

SXH – Favorite decade of music?
MF – 70’s. The soul and honesty in the music was amazing.

SXH – Vice of the moment?
MF – Porn. Can’t help it.

SXH – What is one goal outside of music Mickey Factz has yet to accomplish?
MF – Win an oscar!

The latest from Unholy Matrimony has arrived at the Comme des Garcons Guerrilla Store +1 213 location and we would like to give you a first look at these exciting new prints from UM. The new “Print” line items include some new tees and tote bags in different sizes. Like all Unholy Matrimony garments, careful detailing is present and special hand-dyed treatments have been used to give the new items their distinct look. And speaking of the CdG Guerrilla Store +1 213 location, the shop is in its last couple of weeks of existence, so be sure to stop by before the occupation is over. Casely-Hayford Collection Spring/Summer 2009 Collection

Joe Casely-Hayford, former Creative Director of Savile Row’s Gieves & Hawkes, credited with bringing the company into the 21st century and his son Charlie Casely-Hayford, who is the current face of Dr. Martens alongside Coco Sumner, have joined forces to create a new menswear brand which fuses English sartorialism with British Anarchy. Joe, who was awarded an OBE last year for services to the fashion industry, says “The brand chooses to either enhance or subvert British style”. The Casely-Hayford signature is founded on formal clothing mixed with elements from London’s youth culture, to create what they call ‘a darkened aspiration’.

“The Casely-Hayford Man is interested in understated elegance, enduring quality, fine fabrics and subtle but innovative detailing. Our intent is to create beautiful and desirable clothing that tells a story” says Joe.

“Our brand is not just about fashion, we see each item as an investment for our customers and try to give it permanence through the idea of ‘innovation through tradition’. Our knowledge of the past allows us to create for the future. We like the idea of modernism and classicism sitting side by side” explains Charlie.

The duality of the brand reflects Joe’s design history, from creating stage clothes for Punk bands like the Clash to more recently dressing some of the highest ranking members of the British establishmentwhilst at Gieves & Hawkes. Casely-Hayford is the first brand in high fashion to have a father & son working together at the creative helm.

This season combines the urbane qualities of Edward VIII, the first modern day English sartorialist, with the contemporary sportswear of London’s street culture in a distilled manner; references are subtle and concealed. There is a simultaneous emphasis on lightness and substance. Technical fabrics are fused with formal wear; sporting items are formalised through the use of fine silk Dogtooth jersey fabric and suits are given underplayed contemporary twists.

Casely-Hayford S/S 2009 will be sold exclusively through Dover Street Market in London from January.

Mark Dean Veca: Paintings, Wall Drawings and Collaborations Recap

I had the opportunity to check out Mark Dean Veca’s Paintings, Wall Drawings and Collaborations exhibtion at the UAG gallery in San Diego last night and I must say it was an amazing experience. The show served as sort of a mini-retrospective encompassing the last 10 years of his work in addition to 2 new wall paintings he did inside of the gallery and outside as well. I took some images of some of the great work on display and I would like to take a moment to share with all of you.

KZO x Unholy Matrimony Autumn/Winter 2009

KZO and Unholy Matrimony will be linking up again to put forth some great pieces for the Autmn/Winter 2009 season. We have shown you efforts from the two entities in the past, so we are excited to show you the latest from SlamxHype blogger, Joel K., and Brett Westfall of Unholy Matrimony. Four new pieces are offered all with extremely interesting design features: uneven thermal pants with an antiquated design that places buttons around the rear for easy access and what not; tees (which are not pictured, but the graphics featured in the background of these images are used for them); cropped flannel pants that can zip off below the knee; and my personal fave, the flannel that comes with a detachable hood and sleeves. The flannel can also be folded into a pouch to be carried around if need be. Past works from their combined efforts have produced some very high quality pieces, and I am certain these will be no exception.

Theophilus London will soon be a name you won’t forget. As he forges his own lane within today’s clustering and assimilating music industry, Theophilus has became the face of a new and refreshing musical scene, blending genres, races, and audiences alike. His stance with back turned against the “in-crowd” brought Theophilus London to our attention, as we continue our support of his latest project we sat down to pick the musically-gifted brain of a worldly, intelligent man.

1. What would you say is the distinct Theophilus London sound?

Its a bit innovative in a sense. Its talking to all cultures. It makes people wanna dance, love and watever else they wanna do. What I love most about my sound is the connection of me and my audience. It creates anxienty for me. My reactions on stage, their reactions when I’m on stage changes my thought process every time. It happens so quick for me. Its like I’m on stage then I’m at work creating That’s my sound … Soul.

2. Your name isn’t one that is very common what is the origins of of the name Theophilus London?

My father Moses London named me after my great grandfather Theophilus London. So I’m the second. Theo means God its greek and philus means love, like the city of philly. So its The love of god or the highest power. Or who ever u worship (laughs)

3.Can you give a bit of insight in to the naming of your latest project “This Charming Mixtape”?

Its a contrast of Charming and Evil. My original work EP is titiled “This Charming Man” which includes records like TnT and Cold Pillow. This Mixtape is just a prequel to my huge project. Which will come out with a label as well. I find myself making records so much these days. I’m such a mover in a sense (laughs) I’m always tryna bring out a mood I nver brought before and breaking new sounds and attitude. It kills me sometimes. I loved Cold Pillow for a week and I’m on to the next record. I hate living life like that but its a habit.

4. As you grow as an artist who are some of the musical influences you have admired, and have gained inspiration from?

Michael Jackson
The Smiths
James brown
Fela kuti
Sun-Ra
Prince
Jay-z
And things that remain timeless like water

5.What have been some of your influences from your travels around, and how do you see these influences incorporated into your music?

Great question, Because my travels is what brings my music to life. I meditate now to bring that to my reality. I can think Im somewhere smell, taste and walk the atmosphere as if I were there. Take in the awareness of the people, their current moods and thoughts. Like in Cold Pillow – I wrote that record from being around depressed couples. I can write a record by staring at a beautiful girl……… Or at least what I call beautiful that is. Went to Guam and wrote a record called Live in Me. in some years I plan to write a song in every country I desire. 13 countries. Keep your ears close to that because its already happening.

6. Who do you currently have an online presence with to make sure the masses hear and are able to support your music?

Various sites …. Rcrdlbl.com, Herfection.com , 2dopeboys.com, madonlyblogspot.com just to name a few. Plus every thing is on My Myspace.com/londonwave haha shameless promotion.

7.Any upcoming projects outside of music?

I’m wrting some cool lyrics on the walls of a good frinds bathroom. I’m also learing to live with dogs. I also love hanging with fans and experiencing it facefront. These things inspire my art. Which leads to inspire my musical projects.

8.Accomplishments yet to achieve outside of music?

Learning my higher self – staying in touch with my relatives -
