“Secondhand Sureshots” is a movie chronicling an experimental in creative sound recycling by some of today’s best beat makers.

Produced by internet radio station Dublab, it follows LA based DJs and producers Daedelius, J-Rocc, Nobody and Ras G in their mission to locate the forgotten, old, crackly sounds found on thrift store 45s and turn them into something new and exciting. A must watch for all those vinyl freaks out there who have spent hours trawling through dusty crates of useless, unwanted vinyl in search of that elusive and unkown break.

Here is a look at the Official video for Saturday Come Slow, from Massive Attack. Another single from Heligoland, featuring the vocals from Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz.

On the second floor of Cambridge University’s Department of Engineering, behind a vast array of home made speakers and Seventies-era hi-fi equipment, sits a rarely-used container-sized room called the Anechoic Chamber – a room designed to create total silence.

On visiting an Anechoic Chamber, John Cage entered expecting to hear silence, but he wrote later: “I heard two sounds, one high and one low. When I described them to the engineer in charge, he informed me that the high one was my nervous system in operation, the low one my blood in circulation.” True silence is impossible.

Ruhal Ahmed, a former detainee at Guantanamo Bay, has a special relationship to silence. For a period of two and a half years, he was repeatedly questioned by military staff at the Cuban base, where his interrogators would often play music to him repeatedly at high volume. This short film by Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin – one of a number made to accompany the new Massive Attack album Heligoland, and featuring the track Saturday Comes Slow – is a meditation on Ruhal Ahmed’s experience in Guantanemo.

It is also about the use of sound on the human body, for both pleasure and pain – as sound expert Michael Furman also explains in this absorbing film, at different points illuminating, beautiful and disturbing.

Continuing their work with both the J Dilla Estate as well as Serato Stones Throw has stepped in to facilitate the creative of Donut Shop, a package meant for any Hip Hop Serato user who has anything produced by the late producer in their libraries, and that should be all of them. The multiple piece set features a total of 6 unreleased Dilla instrumentals with 3 being of the completely unreleased variety hand selected by J. Rocc. As if the notion of more Dilla music wasn’t enough, Studio No.1 was enlisted to create great packaging with donut illustrations used through-out, including Donut slipmats. Currently on pre-release order status the complete set has a release date set for May 10th.

One of the unreleased tracks available from Donut Shop is the J. Dilla remake of the Men without Hats classic, I’m not sure if I should even refer to it as that, ” Safety Dance”. It may seem a bit strange to hear such a prolific Hip Hop producer take a stab at such a overly cheery song, but knowing a bit about the catalog of Dilla will tell you the man loved a challenge, and what he could do with the most unexpected of material left many in amazement. So we present to you J Dilla – “Safety Dance” as a prelude to Donut Shop.

Listen:

Out this week is “Under great white northern lights” the new concert movie and live album from Detroit minimalist blues, rock duo, The White Stripes.

Directed by Emmett Malloy, the tour documentary follows the group on their first-ever tour of Canada, but it’s no ordinary tour as they ignore the usual stadiums and head for smoky bars and grungy rock clubs, bowling alleys and even a city bus in Winnipeg, a flour mill, and on a boat in the harbor of Charlottetown. Not only does the movie feature much of the band’s astounding live perforomances, it includes a rare insight into the former husband and wife’s relationship in a series of personal interviews and intimate footage of them rehearsing and writing new tracks.

The movie is already being favourably compared to rockumentary classics such as the Rolling Stones “Gimme Shelter”, and, unsurprisingly for a band who’s image, artwork and stage show is so clearly defined, it looks amazing, using a rich colour palette and camera effects against the barren Canadian landscape.

Check out the trailer below.

The movie is in cinemas now and the live album can be purchased here.

It’s alarming to think that its been ten years since the last Reflection Eternal album. Train of Thought for many was an instant classic. The Cincinnati / Brooklyn hybrid duo brought a refreshing sound in during the era of the “jiggy” rappers. So, to think after such a highly touted debut they would split to work on solo project, which turned out equally as special, was a bit blasphemous, but here we are ten years later with a reunited Reflection Eternal sounding like they never missed a beat; the same heavy soul uplifting music with a positive tone. I for one am esthetic to have seen “In This World” released as the Revolutions Per Minute first single. Setting the perfect tone for the group to regain the support they once held and introduce a new crowd of fans to what music with means actually sounds like. Revolutions Per Minute slated to released April 20th looks to be well worth the ten year hiatus.

“Transverse Temporal Gyrus” is a special performance piece created by Brooklyn’s art rock noise mongers Animal Collective and video artist Danny Perez to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of New York’s Guggenheim Museum. The performance will feature original recorded music composed specifically for the event along with video projections, costumes, and props, rendering the band members and performers into insane, visual abstractions. During the evening, guests will be invited to freely explore the space in order to fully immerse themselves in the environment they create. With a collective of artists that are so passionate, creative and intense this is sure to be an event to remember.

Animal Collective combine folk rock with vintage synths, samples, noise and psychedelia to create some of the most inventive and fun music around today. Their current US tour has seen them working with Danny Perez to present their four years in the making visual album “Oddsac”, which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

Weather you know him as Mayer Hawthorne or Dj Haircut is an arbitrary fact, but one fact that isn’t arbitrary at all is that the soulfully styled music the man puts out has the music world and masses have taken a liken to in a major way. Stones Throw really found that gem in the rough with Mayer Hawthorne as his debut release, A Strange Arrangement, has seen the singing alter ego of the man from Detroit be acknowledge for multiple accolades as well as perform on network television to the likes of Jimmy Kimmel. It was only right for his project to see a second visual treat in. “I Wish It Would Rain” was the perfect choice of tracks for the second video treatment; a simple melodic tune that really showcases the inspiration behind the sound Mayer Hawthrone has created for himself. A sound unique to this day and age of music overrun by uninspired vocals and catchy musical backdrops. The visuals for “I Wish It Would Rain” are perfect for the low key subject matter of the song as well as the period of music Mayer Hawthone’s sound gains inspiration from.

They stuck it out playing garages and living rooms. Times were good but bigger things beckoned and they gapped it to New York – the edge of the pier, as Matt puts it. Four albums later they’re still in the big city. They talked to The New Order about their influences, ‘Skizz’ rock, and why they’re almost due for a fight.

What does A.R.E. stand for?
Brian: About 10 years ago I had a dream that I was a detective in the future, and the name on my door was A.R.E. Weapons, like first name A.R.E., last name Weapons.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
Matt: Ah…with difficulty.

It seems quite eclectic; you’ve got a bit of everything.
B: New York Street Rock? I’d say electro- punk, but that isn’t really fair cause it’s not super electro and it’s not really that punky. It’s a ball park, but New York electro punk will do.
M: I made up a name for it but it’s not really sticking. ‘Skizz’. We’re skizz rockers.

The Gorillaz promo train hasn’t stopped just let. After releasing a megamix of the entire Plastic Beach album last week today saw the official release of the first visual visuals from the album, for the single “Stylo” ft. Bobby Womack and Mos Def. The hyper realistic animations are nothing new to those whom are familiar with the visual presentation the Gorillaz always reply upon for their videos, nor are the theatrical stories used, something I greatly appreciate. All of the customary Gorillaz pieces are there which for fans can be a plus but sometimes that unchanged formula can read as dull and not progressive enough. We shall see how this plays out with the release of Plastic Beach March 8th.

The latest release from Kitsune records is a new mix CD from Gildas & Masaya based on their travels to Tokyo.

Originally created to help promote the Kitsune fashion brand, their record label has been consistently releasing a varied selection of singles and albums since 2002, spanning pretty much ever genre out there from electro, to indie rock and even rave and pop. Helping launch the career of some of the hottest acts out their now (Hot Chip, La Roux, The Drums, Feist), it has arguably gone on to gain even greater success and widespread acclaim than the garments themselves.

The label’s latest series of albums is a collection of mix albums created by Kitsune founders Gildas Loaec & Masaya Kuroki (aka Gildas & Masaya). Based on their travels around the world, it celebrates the international and varied aesthetic of both their approach to music and fashion by creating and eclectic mix of their favourite pop, rock and dancefloor hits. Having already visited their home town of Paris, and New York the latest edition hits Japan’s capital city, Tokyo.

Kitsune Tokyo: Mixed By Gildas & Masaya hits stores this week and features tracks from Phoenix, Two Door Cinema Club, Friendly Fires, Munk and Crystal Fighters plus many exclusive remixes.
