David Mullane is the owner of W2 Store in Glasgow Scotland. He was the man who brought Glasgow the world’s last Comme des Garçons Guerilla Store, which occupied what is now the W2 space, from 2008 until July 2009. W2 store itself is a small but charming set up, situated in a former cow shed just off Byres Road. Currently it stocks Margaret Howell, Comme des Garçons and is the the only store in Scotland carrying Adam Kimmell. David is some what a legend in the UK fashion scene and gained his fashion industry credentials as Merchandise Director of The Warehouse, Glassford Street, Glasgow: an iconic Glasgow-style building on six-floors, where from the late 1970s through to the mid 1990s the leading names in world fashion were gathered. David’s contribution to UK fashion is undeniable and his contacts within the scene are both impressive and vast. W2 is definitely my favourite store in the UK and it is a pleasure to have David as a friend. I managed to have a chat with him recently for SlamXHype and here is what he had to say.
SLAMXHYPE/ What’s your favorite thing about where you live?
DM/ Glasgow School of Art, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928), and the energy that the creative people, who study there, bring to the city.
SLAMXHYPE/ Whats is your favorite store in your city?
DM/ Kember & Jones is located on Byres Road, just a few minutes walk from W2. They bake pastries daily, which we love to have at W2 with a freshly made cafetière of coffee.
SLAMXHYPE/ What’s your favorite holiday location?
DM/ We have family in Switzerland, so that makes it easy to visit. I love Basel, which is home to my favourite architects, Hertzog & Demeuron. The central location of Basel makes it possible to visit many special places. Favourites include the church by Le Corbusier at Ronchamp and the stunning baths complex at Vals, designed by Peter Zumthor.
SLAMXHYPE/ One place you really desire to visit?
DM/ My partner was born in Rangoon, Burma and only now is the country becoming welcoming to visitors.
SLAMXHYPE/ What are you reading?
DM/ Mary Ann in Autumn by Armistead Maupin; the eighth installment in the Tales of The City series. It’s a light, easy read for bedtime.
SLAMXHYPE/ Who are you currently listening to?
DM/ James Blake – The Wilhelm Scream. Kyrk, who assists me at W2, recently introduced me to the James Blake sound world and I’m luvvin it!
SLAMXHYPE/ What are three items you don’t leave home without?
DM/ IPhone, Comme des Garcons wallet, in black and my beloved Comme des Garcons Homme Plus backpack. It’s made from water resistant polyester, woven in a grey Prince of Wales check and it feels like a piece of clothing but contains my daily life!
SLAMXHYPE/ What’s the must have item for you for S/S 2012?
DM/ Adam Kimmel’s garment dyed suiting is style and comfort combined. I can’t wait for a blue 2 piece I ordered to wear with a white collarless shirt and his leather-lined canvas sneakers: boom!
SLAMXHYPE/ What are the worst trends around at the moment?
DM/ 1. Mustard and oxblood Chinos by Topman are so ubiquitous that they stifle originality. 2. Print in quantity can be an ugly look, so that trend also worries me.
SLAMXHYPE/ What influences you on a daily basis?
DM/ Nothing more than Facebook, to which I am probably addicted.
SLAMXHYPE/ What’s the best film you have seen in the last year?
DM/ Glasgow Film Festival 2012 brought us Cloud Burst, By Thom Fitzgerald: Stella and her beloved Dot have been together for thirty years when Dot’s granddaughter decides that she needs to be in care. Stella fights back, hilariously arranging Dot’s escape. The pair then set off on a road trip to Nova Scotia, where they can be wed. On the journey they pick up Prentice, a handsome hitchhiker. The resulting adventure is a touching delight.
SLAMXHYPE/ What is you favourite website?
DM/ This site brings memories of our recent visit to Frank Lloyd Wright’s most celebrated house, Falling Water, Western Pennsylvania. The visit was a long-held ambition, which means that it always pays to have a wish list. http://www.fallingwater.org
SLAMXHYPE/ What will you do after this interview?
DM/ Today was the focus of the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth 2nd. Highlights will be on TV now so I’m off to feel a bit patriotic.
