5 Minutes with… Michael Williams (ACL)
We used to run these Mini Interviews quite often, they were always really popular, and not only are they fun to read, they’re fun to write at both ends of the tale. To start 2010 we decided to get in touch with some friends and have a quick chat about what they thought of 2009 and what’s to come in 2010.. We’ve started with a focus on Menswear, and who better to start this project off with than A Continous Lean’s Michael Williams.

What’s 2010 going to be about for you? Kicking 2009’s ass. 2009 was a shitty, shitty year and my mission is to crush last year personally and professionally. Onward and upward.
What are the worst trends in menswear today? Boat shoes? Also, the fact that every store has to have a special make-up of INSERT DESIGNER SHOE LINE. (I’m guilty of this.)
Whats the best thing to come out of 2009 menswear trends? A renewed interest in quality. Now people need to understand that you have to pay for quality. Everything in this world isn’t cheap.
What’s the must have item for any man in 2010? This is a tough question for me. I’m a traditionalist — I like classic things. A trench coat, a great pair of English brogues, a field jacket, the perfect oxford shirt. These are my choices every year till the end of time.
What’s your favourite thing about where you live? The fact that New York is so big that I don’t ever have to worry about running into my ex-girlfriend. New York is not an easy city to live in, so you know that people only live here because they want to pursue a goal, be that a career thing or a personal mission to conquer this piece. There is no reason to be here if you aren’t after something. That is what I love about my city. This question brings this to mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NL_KMmD39XE
What are you reading? Vintage catalogs. LL Bean, Eddie Bauer and all that good stuff.
What’s the next film you’ll watch? Some scary shit — according to Netflix: Why We Fight
Your favourite store in your city? 3-way tie. Paula Rubinstein, Melet Mercantile and Strong Arm Clothing Supply Co.
Whats the best thing to come out of Blog Culture? On one hand I think it is good for a lot of clothing brands and smaller labels. It is also cool for the consumers as they get more specialized information more quickly. So if you are into Native American textiles, boom there are four blogs for you to read to be a part of that community. On the other hand I think it leads to some pretty serious group think.
