Contemporary Californian artist Barry McGee made a return to the PRISM gallery in Los Angeles over the weekend with a solo exhibition of new works. In the artist’s second showing at the gallery (the first being 2009’s MindTheGap), McGee integrates his strong visual language, with its “striking geometric compositions, color fields and recurring characters”, into a site-responsive installation that converts the gallery into a vibrant space that immerses viewers in a chaotic blend of drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures and photographs. The exhibition, running until June 30, precedes a celebration of McGee’s work over the last two decades which will be showcased in the anticipated Barry McGee Retrospective at the University of California Berkeley Art Museum in August.
