Hyde S.K 'Fashion with Compassion' A/W '08 Collection
Influenced by Native American patterns and a sprinkling of the occult, London-based designer Sacha Knight creates intricately detailed handmade bags for her brand Hyde S.K. Previous collections have used leather as their primary material, but this clashed with the designer’s vegetarian lifestyle so she set out to find an animal-friendly alternative for the A/W ’08 range. She finally found what she was looking for with Lorica, a high-tech man-made material that is lightweight, breathable, waterproof, flexible and strong. Like leather, it wears in beautifully and improves and softens with age, and it even has a ‘suede’ side.
Aware that veganism is more often associated with bad dreadlocks and nutrient deficiency than with stylish accessories, Knight flipped the script by using bright neon and metallic colours instead of the earthy tones you might expect. The result is a lively, unusual collection of unisex and ladies’ bags and backpacks embellished with hand-carved wooden snake scales, snake-shaped charms and guitar picks. The range is available now at stockists such as Goodhood and through the Hyde S.K website. Saving the animals has never looked so good.
