Billionaire entrepreneur, Elon Musk, has revealed designs for a supersonic Hyperloop transport system which, if built and put to use, could link Los Angeles and San Francisco in just 30 minutes. Musk, who is the founder of Paypal, Tesla Motors and space technology company, SpaceX, has elaborated on plans which he first mentioned in 2012, revealing Hyperloop – an incredibly ambitious design that would use magnets and fans to shoot capsules on a cushion of air through a tunnel at speeds upwards of 700mph.”Hyperloop is a new mode of transport that seeks to change this paradigm by being both fast and inexpensive for people and goods,” Musk has stated. The plan is to create a transport system that is in every aspect, more efficient than current models. “If we are to make a massive investment in a new transportation system, then the return should by rights be equally massive,” Musk says. “Compared to the alternatives, it should ideally be: safer, faster, lower-cost, more convenient, immune to weather, sustainably self-powering, resistant to earthquakes and not too disruptive to those along the route.”
The designs for Hyperloop are open source and Musk is welcoming feedback from others to advance the design and make it a reality. For more information on this incredible project, visit Designboom, who deliberate on the plans in more detail.
