British artist Damien Hirst has unveiled plans for the towering statue ‘Verity’ with a proposal to install it as an “angel of the West” in the coastal town of Ilfracombe in Southwest England. The bronze-finished stainless steel figure is of a pregnant woman standing upon a plinth of books and holding a glass-fiber sword skyward, whilst in the other hand holding a set of scales behind her back. Called in the ilfracombe application ‘a monumental modern allegory of truth and justice’, is thought to be the most recent piece in Hirst’s ‘Virgin Mother’ series. The statue will stand at 20.25 meters (66 feet, four inches) in height. The plans are already proving to be controversial, and it will be interesting to see if Hirst’s proposal is approved.
