Work has been completed on “Metropol Parasol”, the Redevelopment of the Plaza de la Encarnacion in Seville, Spain. The stunning structure, designed by J. MAYER. Architects, has become a new icon for Seville, exploring the centre of the city as contemporary urban meeting place. The modernity of the vast structure is in stark contrast to the medieval inner city in which it resides and will activate the square below as an attractive destination for tourists and locals alike. The “Metropol Parasol” scheme offers an archaeological museum, a farmers market, an elevated plaza, multiple bars and restaurants underneath and inside the parasols, as well as a panorama terrace on the very top of the parasols. The innovative bonded timber-constructions are polyurethane-coated and the parasols grow out what was originally an archaeological excavation site into a contemporary landmark, defining a unique relationship between the historical and the contemporary city.
