London’s Serpentine Gallery has unveiled plans for the twelfth annual Gallery Pavilion commission, this time designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei. The design enables visitors to go beneath the Serpentine’s lawns to explore the history of its previous Pavilions. Inside the cork clad room, there will be 11 columns to characterise the past designs and a final twelfth column which will support a floating platform roof 1.4 metres above ground. Previous to this, the design team created the famous Beijing National Stadium (the Bird’s Nest Stadium), which was built for the 2008 Olympic Games and received a lot of positive attention. The pavilion will open 1 June, 2012.
