For the past decade, Chicago has been enduring a violence epidemic, with a death toll in the thousands and casualties mirroring the losses experienced by the US army in Iraq war over the same period. While certain figures within Chicago’s hip hop circuit have given the city’s violence widespread notoriety and glorification, many people outside the city do not understand who is involved and what is prompting such a high level of violence.
Directed by London-born photographer/filmmaker Will Robson-Scott, Chi Raq offers an intimate video portrait of life in South and West Chicago, allowing its subjects to take centre stage and tell their stories in their own words. Premiering on August 13, the film is the first in a series of exclusive commissions for Protein TV, and will be available for public viewing on the channel’s website. Take a look at the trailer above.
