A Vintage Watch Nerd’s Critical Dissection Of The Rolex Daytona
Introduced nearly 50 years ago in 1963, the Daytona is among the most loved, iconic and legendary models from the world’s most well-known luxury watch brand, Rolex. Housed in a robust “Oyster” case, the Daytona is designed to be worn daily and to withstand the sort of wear that comes with that kind of exposure to the world’s elements. Nearly 25 years after the introduction of the first self-winding Daytona, versions in stainless steel remain one of the most difficult watches to buy new from authorized dealers. Waiting lists are usually reserved for top clients and range from one to five years. Self-proclaimed “vintage watch nerd” Paul Botros of Hodinkee recently managed to get his hands on one of these prized models – a brand new stainless steel version, fitted with a black dial – and over the week that he had it on loan, he made sure to inspect every detail, which he outlines in an article written on the evolution of the Rolex Daytona.
