Childish Gambino’s ‘Because The Internet’ Has A.D.H.D.
Listening to Childish Gambino‘s new album Because The Internet is like being in the mind of a kid with unmedicated A.D.H.D. It’s packed with a whole procession of wildly different beats, interludes, and skits, Gambino himself never settling on a single rap style, jumping from double-time rapping to sing-song to chanting in the midst of cuts like “The Party” and “No Exit.”
Moreover, like a Tumblr page, he draws from a ton of different sources to create Because The Internet: ”Flight of the Navigator” sounds like a Frank Ocean song. “Zealots of Stockholm (Free Information)” could have been on Yeezus. I may just be the beat and the subject matter, but “Worldstar” could be a Migos song, right?
Frankly, it’s exhausting, but if that’s how your mind works too, then Because The Internet might just be the best thing since… well, the Internet.
