Music is an obvious inspiration to streetwear, and it’s always great to see labels reference our heroes, however whilst some brands are happy looking towards the obvious choices of legendary, but overused punk or hip-hop groups Stussy have always stood out for their ability to dig deeper into our culture and reference the less obvious (but arguably more influential) names. Having previous created t-shirts for re-releases by Arthur Russell and Liquid Liquid they have now created a special edition tour t-shirt for the one and only DJ Harvey‘s tour of Japan.
Despite being hugely influential in bringing the early New York hip-hop, disco, electro, house and garage club scene to the UK and Europe in the 80s with his Moist and Ministry Of Sound club nights and residencies , Harvey has never really attained the household name status of many of his contemporaries who went on to become the first wave of superstar DJs. This anonymity helped him retain a sense of artistic freedom which has enabled him to move seamlessly between commercial and underground scenes recording everything from banging house to stoner rock for labels as diverse as Mo’Wax, Ministry of Sound, Junior Boys Own and Skint and working with artists from LCD Soundsystem to The Police. He still rules today, with his hugely sought after, but highly limited recordings as Black Cock and Maps Of Africa continuing to be collectors items and his Sarcastic Disco parties amongst the best club nights in the world.
His Japanese tour kicks off this weekend and takes in:
1 (Sat) @ OtaRAISE
2 (Sun) RAINBOW DISCO CLUB Harumi Passenger Terminal Stage @ harbor square
3 (holiday Monday) @ FukuokaDECADENT DELUXE
04 (holiday Tuesday) @ NiigataPRAHA
05 (holiday Wed) @ EnoshimaOPPA-LA
07 (Fri) @ OsakaTRIANGLE
08 (Sat) @ AzabuELEVEN
The limited edition Stussy tour t-shirt is available from Stussy Japan.
