"…During the Vietnam war many items have come to be known as canvases on which soldiers engraved their thoughts and feelings. The Zippo lighter was one of them. They would engrave their names, where they were stationed, unit insignias, shared moments of boredom and sadness as well as the rage of their youth.
So attached were the GI’s to Zippos that the Viet-Cong learned to booby trap them with explosives. The VC would leave the lighters in bars and other places frequented by American troops. Sooner or later, a curious, covetous soldier was sure to pick one up, ignite it and explode.
The Vietnamese engraver, a regular of girlie bars, would have a stand at the corner of the room. A device like a dentist tool and an old GMC battery constituted his improvised workshop. The soldier chose from a catalogue the text and the design that was the most appropriate according to his feeling or state of mind. For 25 cents, the engraver would produce the chosen design in only a few minutes. The quality depended on how steady his hand was and how good an eye the engraver possessed."
