Rogue Status – Johan
The first time i can remember watching the news was when my family stayed up all night watching the events of PAN AM flight 103 in which we lost a family member. Sucked.
Next was desert storm, oka crisis in canada, first wtc bombing, oklahoma city, blah blah blah. My father passed in ’96 along with tupac and biggie so in ’98 i moved to nyc on a bus from ottawa but not before witnessing an attempted double homicide ensuring multiple all expense paid trips home to testify. Mistrial.
On 9/11/01…nevermind, i will spare you my where were you on 911 story. On the morning of 9/13/01 i found myself driving a 15 passenger van to ground zero with john walsh of "america’s most wanted" sitting shotgun and a police escort. After clearing 3 checkpoints i hit the brakes and slid for 20 feet in 8 inches of grey mud. When we got out i was standing where trinity park used to be but was now a parking lot for demolished cars stacked 2-4 high. With no escort from then on i was left to cruise the rubble unsupervised for 5 hours while Mr.Walsh did "stand-ups" and interviews with volunteers and such. When you witness events that change the world forever, it changes the way you look at the world. Forever.
Moved to hella, california in ’03, worked at undefeated santa monica for 3 years under the guidance of Chris Gibbs where i learnt of "allover" print capabilities and "awol" emerged. After some early growing pains and hustling them through Union and Undefeated, Adam from Stussy called and told me that I should meet these guys from slamxhype about some blog. Having no clue, we met, and Slam put us on blast. The next weekend i was at a party taking pics of the pool skating and crowd when Aron (anything) was like "you got a blog?" i was like "no". A few days later i was bloggin’, learnt about "flamewars", i.p. adresses, myspace, youtube, googling, im, webstats, and all around "internetting". Too much fun!
Soon after i partnered with Dyrdek and Barker to form Easy Company which allowed me to start hiring my friends Rex Holloway, Jasper Watts, Matt Comer, Awesome Em, Jason Calabretta, Brian Regis, Oak and got to work.
(I asked Yo some questions) Now to answer some of your questions. The gunshow print is something that the world needed. Hate it or love it, the world will have to get used to it. Imitation is the finest form of flattery and we continue to silence all knock-offs with the help from our loyal supporters and legal a-team . I have no idea what the key to success is but i have been a strong believer of 2 words that Gibbs once told me, "do you". Future steps for rogue status would be to keep doing what we’re doing, just better and to keep having fun with it. The "martyr belt" is another design totally open to interpretation and probably worn for different reasons by different people. When we released it from our arsenal the first time in ’05(the last being the 3rd time) we wore it to symbolize the shrapnel of ideas we were about to unleash on the world. Now with that said i only make up a small portion of what comes out from Rogue Status. The best things about ideas is that they are free. Trust yourself. Peace – Yo
