Bernhard Willhelm 10 Men Magazine Cover Story
I have always been interested in the designs and creations of Bernhard Willhelm, more so after being invited to his Menswear collection for Spring/Summer 2010 in Paris last June. The depth of which he dives into for construction and innovation was overwhelming and inspiring. A flocking of young men emerged from backstage as if they had just walked out of the ground of a war zone; face masks of long grass to their knees, war paint, camoflauge short-shorts and siamese boys joint by hair wigs !!
Graduating from the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Bernhard Willhelm passed from being assistant to Walter Van Beirendonck, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Dirk Bikkembergs while soon after starting his own brand in 1999 with a womenswear collection and later sharing his menswear lines in 2003. He has also published his own books of his art works, designed uniforms for the Orphanage Foundation, shown a retrospective of his design/art works, designed his own shoe line, has won the ANDAM grand prize as the most promising talent of the new creative scene. Bernhard Willhelm has also recently worked alongside English photographer Nick Knight for his Fall/Winter 2008-2009 Menswear collection on a video entitled Men In Tights produced by ShowStudio.

10 Magazine, who do both a women’s fashion and men’s fashion magazine, have grabbed the designer for their latest Ten Men’s cover story in which they ask him 10 questions over ten pages that has a related image of Willhelm acting out his blunt and witty answers. Dressed in his own Spring/Summer 2010 collection and Vivienne Westwood the editorial is amazing, although it would only have to be, to live up to this man’s sheer volume of creativity and imagination, he adorns near-costume items such as over the knee gumboots, war helmets with two G.I.Joes wrestling on top of it!, a long grass hat paired with John Lennon styled tinted glasses and a camoflague cape over shiny black swiss balls and adidas sneakers. Phew. It is daring to the point where it is humorous, much like the quality Bernard Willhelm embodies in his own work. We can only imagine the fun they would have had on set with this editorial.
Photographed by Christian Anwander and styled by Sabina Schreder it was shot at Studio Zero in Paris.
