I haven’t been a huge fan of a lot of the collaborations Fred Perry have entered into… most take what is already an iconic item of clothing and add wacky colours, prints and extra logos as an excuse to sell it as a “limited edition” and charge us a whole lot more for it. However, their collaboration with Raf Simons has been one of the most successful ongoing brand relationships I have seen in some time.
Each season sees Simons adapt the polo slightly to make it different from the last and for Spring/Summer 2010 the New Build Polo adds a fluoro pink appliqué laurel and longer ‘double layer’ hem.
You really have to admire the way Simons has dug deep into the brand’s archives to pull out long forgotten logos and designs to base his creations on. Keeping it ultra minimal he has slimmed down the look of the polo shirt with darting in the body and added his own touches such as thinner collars and extended plackets and arms to create a more formal, fashionable take on the sportswear staple. Get yours now from Oki-Ni as I wouldn’t be surprised if these go on to become collector’s items in the years to come.
