MHL by Margaret Howell: The Wardrobe
Margaret Howell talks about her second line, MHL by Margaret Howell, for the first time following the opening of the first European MHL shop in Shoreditch, East London last November. Margaret has been working closely with creative director Terry Jones and photographer Kayt Jones on a series of portraits and accompanying short films. The work features four creatives wearing MHL clothes mixed with personal items from their own wardrobe – each individual embodies the spirit of MHL with their effortless style.
MHL is a tightly edited collection of styles and fabrics all chosen by Margaret and built around a neutral colour palette – the line offers some of Margaret’s favourite pieces with each design referencing the workwear aesthetic and utility function of the original garments. The MHL collection is built on a wardrobe principle and is designed to inspire comfort and creativity in whoever wears it.
“I design for people who need to feel relaxed in what they’re wearing, not self-conscious or uptight. I love that relaxed attitude.” – Margaret Howell
One of the sitters chosen by Margaret and Terry is Los Angeles based actress and UCLA student, Caitlin Gerard and she talks about her work in this short film directed by Kayt Jones. Caitlin chose to wear an iconic matelot stripe cotton jersey top, cotton drill chinos and canvas sneakers, all from the MHL collection, when talking to Terry Jones.
The interviews with photographer Naj Jamai, ethical accessories designer Mark Wystrach and artist/gardener Barbara Brody can all be seen on i-D online and Margaret Howell.
