While London is still the undisputed cultural capital of the UK, Manchester has been nipping at its heels for decades. Ever since the rave and acid house scene in the late ’80s/early ’90s really put it on the map musically, the Northern English city has held its own as a place of character and cultural relevance. Obviously football’s got a lot to do with it too, and it’s these two elements – football and music – which Oi Polloi co-founder, Steve Sanderson, believes are inherent to the city’s functional sense of style. In this short film, boot maker Palladium calls on Sanderson to be their cultural guide through the city, as part of its Boots Explorer series. Sanderson takes us on a stroll through the industrial but creative Northern Quarter, giving us his take on the city’s culture, its collective philosophies and what that means for the styles stocked at his iconic menswear store.
