Here is a great short film, entitle ‘The Cool School’ documenting some of the renegade artists that set Los Angeles alight in the post war era. Inspired by the ugly boulevards, the automobile graveyards and the flashy billboards then moving onto pop art. Names like Ed Ruscha, Dennis Hopper, John Baldessari amongst others expressed there time at the Ferus Gallery during the 50’s and 60’s that was discovered by Walter Hopps which attracted the likes of Andy Warhol. These names all had a cultural ambition in mind for Southern California, they definitely achieved it. This film is most definitely a must see, with it now being aired the PBS Series Independant Lens… epic. Check out the trailer here.
