About Comme des Garcons
Comme des Garcons is french for “Like a Youth” or “Like Boys”. One of the most famous names in Fashion today and certainly one of the most successful exports of Japans creative fields. Rei Kawakubo launched her first womenswear collection in 1969, after its success throughout the 70’s, she went on to release Comme des Garcons first menswear collection in 1978. Her debut in Paris was met with huge acclaim, the collection was deconstructed and dark, at the time a shock to the fashion world, but a signature look from the Japanese label carried on throughout its 40 years plus, and inspiring era after era of new designers to deconstruct the way clothes are made and to be inventive with its pattern and raw design.
Comme des Garcons has throughout the years grown its brand to encompass numerous sub-labels each seeing resounding success, the label has collaborated with some of the biggest names in pop culture, from Levis and Louis Vuitton to Nike and even recently H&M.
With stockists of its label all around the world, Comme des Garcons is a global name, and while its grown to a company with a net income of over US$180 million, it’s never once lost its intergrity and influence throughout its growth.
2004 saw the first of Comme des Garcons first Guerilla store locations in Berlin, going on to open temporary locations in Reykjavik, Warsaw, Helsinki, Singapore, Stockholm, Los Angeles and Athens. The Guerilla Store project went on to create a new phenomenom around the world of Pop Up Stores, again showing just how much influence Comme des Garcons has over the worlds Fashion Industry. Its own permanent retail locations are located in London, Tokyo, Osaka, Paris, NYC, Beijing, Hong Kong, St. Petersburg, and Fukuoka.
