Street artist André Saraiva is perhaps best known for the creation of his “Mr. A” character which was featured last year in the award winning documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop”. He made his own directorial debut in 2011 with his short film, “The Shoe,” co-starring Leo Fitzpatrick and Annabelle Dexter-Jones. Saraiva has exhibited all over the world including shows at Colette, Palais de Tokyo and Air de Paris where he showed his love graffiti for the first time. For MOCA’s landmark “Art in the Streets” show, he tagged up the museum’s bathrooms with his colorful graffiti. André’s show “Love Letters” at half gallery — his first solo exhibition in New York — will include paintings on french letter boxes which he used to paint all over Paris and love notes on stationery, a somewhat anachronistic celebration of communication so closely tied to the romantic. “Love Letters” will be exhibited at half gallery from February 11th until March 1st.

WWD have compiled a great short read by interviewing Paris-based André Saraiva. Having directed a short film for Giorgio Armani, designed a luggage line for Globe-Trotter and stepped in as creative director of the French men’s fashion magazine L’Officiel Hommes there is not much this man can’t do. Currently working on a book for Rizzoli that ranges from his graffiti roots to the man behind the chic clubs, restaurants and hotels—from Le Baron to La Fidélité to Hotel Ermitage.

What’s the most cherished item in your wardrobe?

A vintage American pilot jacket that I found at the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Los Angeles, like, 15 years ago.
My friend Gildas Loaec from [music and clothing label] Kitsuné just released the same jacket, only with different cotton linings. We also designed a line of boxer shorts in matching fabrics.
Which is your favorite underwear label?

I don’t wear underwear. I’m French—I like to smoke cigarettes and get naked.

Some people liken you to Fonzie of Happy Days. Is he a style hero of yours?

Yeah, I used to wear a Fonzie T-shirt just to make fun of myself and my greasy hair. I like the Fifties. I like Marlon Brando in The Wild One.
Tell us about your latest fashion projects.

Well, there’s the luggage line for Globe- Trotter [due in stores this spring]. It’s handmade, very old-school. I travel a lot, so I know a lot about good suitcases. I’m also going to design some limited edition sneakers with Nike that will only be available in my nightclubs. A long time ago, they did a pair of shoes for Studio 54, so it’s kind of a nod to that.

André Saraiva has been very busy of late, the biggest news, his new appointment as the head of fashion magazine Officiel, but whether an artist, editor or entrepeneur, its his iconic style that has most people recognising him. André has mixed up his usual motorcycle look by collaborating with heritage brand Saint James on a monogrammed version of their famous 100-year-old striped shirt. “As a little kid, I would go to Brittany to the sea, I would go to the old fishermen stores, and always grab a few Saint James winter sweaters, and the T-shirts,” he says.

André took their iconic “Naval II” shirt with 21 blue stripes and added a sketch of his signature “Mr. A.” New York is represented on the sleeve in a red and blue sailor’s hat, to tie in The Standard NY’s part of the project – which see’s the shirt being unveiled at this year’s Bastille Day party on the chests of the Standard’s staff. A limited edition of the shirts will be sold at Opening Ceremony in New York and LA, and Colette in Paris.

“The shoe thing was a reference to when I was a kid in the 80s; people used to steal expensive cool loafers,” Saraiva explains. “In America they used to steal your Air Jordans; in France they would steal J.M. Westons.”. The Shoe is Andre’s debut short film made in collaboration with J.M. Weston, and featuring numerous friends of the Parisian artist, Leo Fitzpatrick, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Nicolas Duvauchelle Joséphine de la Baume and Poppy Delevingne; for the soundtrack, Kitsuné brought together the likes of The Virgins..the whole thing is start studded, not to mention it was Olivier Zahm who helped Andre with the Script.
