Days ago we saw Conor Harrington hit a wall in Venice Beach, no comes the opening of his joint exhibition with Antony Micallef at Lazarides. A really exciting collection of works from the two artists, while the group exhibition also included Vhils and Jr. Two gifted artists in their own right, I like the approach of Conor Harrington as he works on canvas as he continues to be inspired from a military angle while Antony Micallef’s work is more suited to the gallery setting as he demonstrates masterful use of the brush and charcoal.

Santa Monica Auctions will hold its 25th anniversary modern and contemporary art auction this coming Saturday, May 30 featuring some hugely well respected names including Banksy, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Raymond Pettibon, Takashi Murakami and Antony Micallef along with the likes of Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring, Robert Rauschenberg, Man Ray, Mark Ryden, Marcel Dzama, FAILE. Featuring paintings, sculptures, photography, multiples and prints the focus can be put towards the latter with modestly priced prints and editions with more welcoming news seeing fresh new faces alongside more established and famed names of contemporary art. “Get Rich Quick!” at Carmichael Gallery

Hollywood’s Carmichael Gallery played host to a group show of epic proportions last night. The list of artists showing is a who’s who of contemporary art. Adam Neate, Antony Micallef, Banksy, Barry McGee, Bast, D*face, Dalek, David Choe,David Choong Lee, Faile, Herbert Baglione, Ian Francis, Kaws, Nick Walker, Paul Insect, Shepard Fairey, Sixeart, Skullphone, Space Invader, Swoon, Will Barras. Arrested Motion put it best “ Visiting the gallery was like seeing a modern day museum retrospective of the last five years in urban art. Truly amazing.”

The show lasts till May 28th and can’t be missed!

Banksy Tesco Print available via Lottery

Banksy’s famous Tesco Mural in London’s Shoreditch has been immortalised as a print to be made available this coming Saturday(6th December) through a lottery system at Pictures on Walls, each ticket costing 1 pound( a maximum of 20 per customer), and proceeds going to the international blindness charity, Sight Savers. Each print will be numbered and signed by the artist’s, other prints include works by SLAMXHYPE favourite Antony Micallef. Thanks to ST for the heads up.

Antony Micallef at GSK Contemporary

The Royal Academy’s Burlington Gardens is hosting a 3 month exhibition entitled GSK Contemporary. Included amongst this show is one of SLAMXHYPE’s favourite Artist’s Antony Micallef selection of new works with a new angle and train of thought behind it. Juxtapoz describes the collection of works, “At once beautiful and troubling, Anthony’s work examines our dichotomous relationship with consumerism, questioning how we can despise multi-national brands yet still allow ourselves to be seduced by them.

He often uses the union of two opposites to make an intriguing chemistry. Micallef’s practice has been summarized as ‘critical pop’, exposing the darker side of our consumerist society.”

The 4 bronze, nickel plated 13ft sculptures from L.A will be displayed in the forecourt. New paintings will be displayed inside, one of which is below.

Outsiders New York

London’s Lazarides Gallery will visit New York for a special 2 week exhibition of new works of a group show entitled ‘The Outsiders’. Slam X Hype blogger, David Choe, will show alongside featured works from Faile, Paul Insect, JR, Antony Micallef, Jonathan Yeo, Miranda Donovan, Invader, Mark Jenkins, Todd James, Vhils, Polly Morgan, Mode 2, BAST, Conor Harrington, Zevs, Blu, Borf and Ian Francis.

“Antony Micallef will show his huge Times Square piece and Faile, JR and Blu, whose huge graphic murals adorned Tate Modern, will show alongside Jonathan Yeo’s porno portrait of the US President. Zevs will perform using his unique liquidated logo on a very different kind of naked canvas. Invader, famous for leaving cubic aliens around the planet, will be revealing his most ambitious psychogeography to date, and another secret work will provide a certain famous lady with some much needed funding for her forthcoming presidential campaign.”
