Dzine at Bass Museum of Art | Video

Art Basel is great, but almost too good, with so many shows on its hard to ensure you get to all, and you’re bound to miss out on some of the better ones. This was the case with DZINE’s show at Bass Museum of Art. One of my favourite artists today, DZINE (Carlos Rolon) manages to blend sub cultures and the streets with fine art like no other, his amazing custom lowrider bike’s are some of the most amazing pieces I’ve seen in Galleries.

“For his exhibition at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami, Dzine created a new custom lowrider tricycle inspired by the concept of Ghost Bike memorials. A ghost bike is a bicycle painted white and chained to a pole near the place where a cyclist has been hurt or killed by a car as a roadside memorial. Dzine’s Ghost Bike is a tricycle painted white and fitted with Swarovski crystals, mirror, fabric, video and audio. The film, conceived by Dzine and Joey Garfield, and edited by Dan Zabinski, consists of film footage Dzine found in his fathers house, and features music by Héctor Lavoe.

Additional works on display are, among others, “The Love Below (Custom Speaker Box Chandelier)”, a customized chandelier with Swarovski crystals fabric, light bulbs, wire and audio; “Across the Universe”, a wall installation with mirror, Swarovski crystals and turntable; and “Infinite Mararishi (after Yajoi Kusama)”, a colorful installation with glass beads, crystals, and mirrors.”

Friends With You Exclusive Studio Visit

During Art Basel Miami we were given the chance to be personally taken through the brand new studios of Friends With You. Friends With You (FWY) is an artist collaborative founded by the two Miami-based artists, Sam Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III. Since its conception in 2002, Friends With You has continued to promote the two artists’ common message of magic, luck, and friendship, through its popular designer toy line, public art installations, new-form playgrounds, published works, live performances, and various animation, motion picture, and multimedia projects.

Their new studio and built-in store lies in the design district of Miami in a beautiful building which incorporates design houses, galleries and now, Friends With You. With a very warm welcome Sam and Arturo showed us through their new and wonderful space.

NADA Art Fair Coverage

For the last day of the Art Basel festivities, yesterday saw us float through the ballrooms of the historic Deauville Beach Resort in North Miami Beach for NADA Art Fair 2009. After reading the line up for the fair we were convinced that NADA would be our pick and although it was much smaller than we expected the show was at a very high standard.

Showing works from galleries such as SUNDAY LES, White Columns, Country Club and Pool Gallery we saw some familiar works from Agathe Snow, Rita Ackermann and Nate Lowman, but we also got introduced to some great new works from artists we were not so familiar with, which is always exciting and I guess is the fundamental reason behind these fairs. Hence, NADA, standing for New Art Dealers Association. Also on offer was a fantastic selection of books and magazines; Whitehot Magazine, Moon Milk by Ryan McGinley, Morel Books and Journal magazine.

The Swiss Institute gallery had a perfect idea to sell limited edition prints from artists, some x50 and some one-off’s all under the thousand dollar mark. All were sold out and they were busy.

Art Basel Miami Coverage

We spent the day at Art Basel, the main fair here in Miami this week(end).. I wasn’t sure how to approach blogging this, its such a huge event, with so many galleries, and so much art, it’s almost overpowering, in that its hard to take everything in, I thought I did a pretty good job at covering the whole fair, but as soon as I left I knew I had missed things.

Never before have I been sick of seeing Warhol work after 5 minutes, but as we got deeper into the fair, we found more and more great stuff. Here’s a highlights package, and while it may seem like a lot of photos, this is truly a small capture.

Max Fish | O.H.W.O.W. at Art Basel Coverage

The iconic bar from New York has popped up in Miami simultaneously with Art Basel festivities. We went to see the bar during the day to get some inside shots for you to see the space without its jam packed expected audience at night.

The light blue building with red ‘Max Fish’ writing looks like a page out of a Dr. Seuss book but inside is an arts lovers dream. A small pool table covered in the industries biggest names stickers; Vans, Supreme and A New York Thing. The bar was a mix mash of Krink drips, Scott Cambell’s dollar bills, Neckface t-shirts and tote bags for sale and somewhere buried beneath was of course; alcohol.

Sitting enjoying your drink on raw wooden benches, the surrounding walls were covered in various collages, paintings and photographs from the art world finest. A small stage in the end lends its hand to a band’s set up equipment and a prime DJ set up in the corner gives away the potential of the nights antics.

Outside we found ample Krink drips all over the walls, more wooden bench seats and large scale trees and bushes framed by a zen-looking bamboo fence. It was warm yesterday so the outside would definitely be the prime sit-down location.

After purchasing the iconic Max Fish tees we left finding the surround blocks concrete walls littered in tags, bombs and stencils from local kids and artists hoping to get noticed by the Max Fish crowds. And it sure does pull a crowd.

Thanks to O.H.W.O.W for bringing the icon to add to the festivities.

Deitch Projects Present The Wynwood Walls

Yesterday we drove to The Wynwood Walls, an outdoor mural exhibition by Deitch Projects in Miami. With an inside area allocated to the murals we found Futura, a change in his work was evident with new color application and flow however the spiral atom’s were a dead giveaway, Shepard Fairy with a striking wall of faces which had been posted up earlier, Kenny Scharf, Aiko, Clare Rojas, who had a striking painting of two people, one showing the other a specific spot on which to look which was extremely captivating, and Nunca.

On the surrounding block outside we found Os Gemeos, a typically faced mural of a mystical land of water and boats, Barry McGee who covered a nearby buliding in his geometric patterns of green, red and white next to a rolled over ute and Swoon, a dream-like image with plenty of movement and life spanning over the corner of a building which the team were still working on as we walked past.

Surrounding galleries were benefiting from the audience that Deitch had drawn, but their inside space was fantastic in the fact that it had a durational photo gallery from each of the contributing artists and their teams taken by Martha Cooper. Something that was definitely worth having as the grand scale of the murals was enough to get intrigued by the in’s and out’s of their personal procedures.

STAGES Art Basel Coverage

Here it is, the opening of the highly anticipated STAGES exhibition at O.H.W.O.W. in Miami for Art Basel. For what is serving as the final leg for the installation the renowned gallery has worked in well with Nike and LIVESTRONG to create the desired effect and more. New names are on hand with this exhibition, including the likes of Os Gemeos and Erik Parker contributing and making this a must see before the doors close on December 6.

Made up of one of the most groundbreaking line up of artists in the world today. Including Rita Ackermann, Tim Barber, Lizzy Bougatsos, Scott Campbell, Julia Chiang, Barb Choit, Peter Chung, Brian Degraw, Ry Fyan, Cyprien Gaillard, Michael Genovese, Todd James, KAWS, Zak Kitnick, Terence Koh, Andrew Kuo, Nate Lowman, Ari Marcopoulos, Adam Marnie, Megan Marrin, Adam McEwen, Santiago Mostyn, Neck Face, Keiichi Nitta, José Parlá, Erik Parker, Brad Phillips, Kenny Scharf, Aurel Schmidt, David Benjamin Sherry, Agathe Snow, Spencer Sweeney, Eric White, Bobbi Woods and Aaron Young. IT AINT FAIR is O.H.W.O.W’s second collective group show shown during Art Basel Miami, after huge success last year its not to be missed this year. Al Moran and Aaron Bondaroff’s ever impressive space is filled with all the energy you can expect with the philosophy and movement created by the two. Not only is the list of artists impressive, the original works created for the show are many of my favourites by the artists too. Aaron Young’s Locals Only is amazing, Barry McGee’s piece is without doubt my favourite by him, Scott Campbell’s Rose, Erik Parkers new piece, and KAWS spongebob piece will be remembered for a long time. All this is rounded off by an amazing installation piece by Julia Chang, exhibited in a room of its own, the artist’ showcases lollipops and the incredible colour which has touched all of us as children.

Le Baron at Art Basel Miami

We don’t normally post party fliers or the like, but I’m guessing alot of you will be at Art Basel next week, and are going to need to fill your nights. Announced today, Parisian hot spot Le Baron will be in Miami for the week, from the 1st December through to the 6th. If you haven’t been to Paris, this is a good chance to experience what is an iconic nightlife created by Andre, and I’m pretty sure you’ll catch all the familiar faces there too.

STAGES moves to Miami for Art Basel

Lance Armstrong and Nike have been sharing their passion for life and sports together through a combined effort STAGES, a global art exhibit aimed at raising worldwide awareness and funds for the LIVESTRONG® Global Cancer Campaign. Capturing the spirit that survives in Lance, more than 20 artists donated their time and creativity to put across a message on behalf of LIVESTRONG, Armstrong’s foundation committed to inspiring and empowering people affected by cancer.

With a strong debut in Paris, STAGES launched at Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery with a team of the world’s most accomplished and promising international artists, including Ed Ruscha, Cai-Guo Qiang, Richard Prince, Catherine Opie, KAWS, Eric White, José Parlá, Christopher Wool, Tom Sachs, Dzine, and Rosson Crow. The second part of their journey took place in New York City hosted by Deitch Projects where the team picked up four extra members with new works: the Os Gemeos twins, Futura and Dustin Yellin.

The finale will take place at one of the art world’s biggest global events: Art Basel Miami Beach. To create an even louder voice for the LIVESTRONG message, STAGES calls in Los Angeles based Christian and Rob Clayton, aka the Clayton Brothers, the furious paintings from Erik Parker and the black and white portraiture genius of artist Tomoo Gokita for a high energy show full of talent and spirit. All artwork on display as part of STAGES will be available for purchase with proceeds directly benefiting LIVESTRONG.

Art Basel is nearly upon us yet again, and O.H.W.O.W is set to play a big role, not only playing host to Maxfish, STAGES but also its own second installment of ‘It Ain’t Fair’. An amazingly impressive line up of artists from the O.H.W.O.W community, including Rita Ackermann, Tim Barber, Lizzy Bougatsos, Scott Campbell, Julia Chiang, Barb Choit, Peter Chung, Brian Degraw, Ry Fyan, Cyprien Gaillard, Michael Genovese, Todd James, KAWS, Zak Kitnick, Terence Koh, Andrew Kuo, Nate Lowman, Ari Marcopoulos, Adam Marnie, Megan Marrin, Adam McEwen, Santiago Mostyn, Neck Face, Keiichi Nitta, José Parlá, Erik Parker, Brad Phillips, Kenny Scharf, Aurel Schmidt, David Benjamin Sherry, Agathe Snow, Spencer Sweeney, Eric White, Bobbi Woods and Aaron Young.
