Tomorrow night will be the official opening of our group show that we have been working so hard on the last couple of months. The ’soft opening’ that went down this past Saturday was really amazing, but this is the real deal here, so it should make for an epic evening. The artists are back from Art Basel, so most will be in attendance. The works that the artists submitted have been nothing short of amazing and this is a definite must show. In addition to the wonderful art that is being showcased, Sean Reveron of Rockers NYC and Shawn Mortensen will be providing the soundtrack for the evening. And as an added bonus, the fine folks at dubFrequency have put together an after party for us that will be taking place at the East Third Steakhouse located in the Arts District, which is adjacent to Little Tokyo in Downtown Los Angeles. All in all, it should make for an extremely memorable evening. If you are in Southern California, swing by to check out this unique exhibition. Check the information for the exhibition and after party after the jump.

Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name”
A hugely talented artist, about to embark on his first solo exhibition in NYC early next year. Here’s his answers to our introductory questions with BAILOUT in mind.

SLAMXHYPE: Please introduce yourself and what is your background?

Having paved her way onto the Australasian scene, she is now proving to be a huge hit on the world scale with here impressive and eye catching Misery Characters. Check out all the details for the show here, and read on for a glimpse of Misery’s work for the exhibition.

SLAMXHYPE – Please introduce yourself and what is your background?

MISERY – My name is Misery, I live in Auckland New Zealand. I paint characters of animals and little girls mostly. They are often very sweet and innocent like with a dash of something dark and twisted. I have loved painting and drawing since I was a small child. When I was 16 I became friends with a bunch of graffiti writers. They were always encouraging me to come out and paint with them. I started going out with my paints and a big jar of Indian ink and putting up my characters around Auckland city. This led to many art shows in New Zealand, Australia, USA, Germany, France.

My Misery Characters quickly grew into the production of Clothing, accessories, cosmetics, stationary and animation. There are many things I would love to see my work applied to. For now my focus is first and foremost making art, painting and exhibiting around the globe.

SXH – Can you tell us a bit about your artwork for the show?

M – My work for the show, is based on our environment, the manufactured world we are born in to where consumerism is brainwashed into us right from the start. How we spend everyday feeding the consumer monster because this is what many of us are taught will bring happiness and fulfillment, how we are ruled by the dollar to make what we believe will create a perfect world.

SXH – How did you interperate and execute the title “Bailout”?

M – I wanted to work with the idea of a circus, all the characters are sad with painted on happy faces. The obese clown lady is the consumer machine. Her bottom half is like a meat grinder. people must feed her constantly. She stuffs her face with cakes. The sad clowns turn the grinder which poors out a fountain of oil, in to a sort of underworld. where babies sleep being watched over by a voodoo clown woman cluttering their dreams with the want of manufactured goodies. kids eating fast food. dollar girls that are slaves to the evil ring master being pulled along on his segway.

SXH – What is your take on commercial art?

M – I’m not sure? Commercial art is fine as long as there’s a balance I guess.

I often get hassled if I take on a commercial job, get called a sell out etc. But you know you have to make a living. So as much as I don’t particularly love doing those kinds of jobs sometimes you need to. I’d much rather be making paintings for me. I think that’s the reason I love graffiti/ street art so much. It’s not for money or anyone really, just for fun and cos I enjoy it.

SXH – How do you plan to celebrate the holidays?

M – Probably at the beach, My mum has a beautiful house on Auckland’s West Coast.
I’ll probably hang out there a lot, spend some time with my dog. have dinner parties, I love cooking for people. drink some wine. go for bush walks in the forest by our place. There are a bunch of cool festivals here over summer, so maybe some road trips and a bit of that.

The latest in our series of profiles of artists involved in our group show “Bailout” kicking off this Saturday. Michael Leon is not only one of my personal favourite artists but also an inspiration to me, a genuine icon of people within this industry of ours who have done incredibly well and have so much to offer, and are humble to match. Read about Michael’s inspirations and more after the jump.

SLAMXHYPE – Please introduce yourself and what is your background?

MICHAEL LEON - Michael Leon. My background is in skateboarding related art and design. Currently working in Portland Oregon as Design Director of Nike SB. Capricorn rising.

SXH – Can you tell us a bit about your artwork for the show?

ML – I’m using a format that I’ve been using for some time, the shape of a skull, sometimes wearing sunglasses. This time I’ve reinterpreted by doing a series of photographic portraits that are contained within that shape and photocopied onto large sheets of paper. The photocopy is a format that I have a connection with from doing zines and I like that it feels disposable. I think of them like pages ripped from a giant zine.

SXH – How did you interperate and execute the title “Bailout”?

ML – Loosely, I wanted to make something really straightforward and plain, stripping away all the parts I usually use with the skulls and focus on the faces, so hopefully when they are all tiled on the wall it will feel kinda confrontational. I guess just the fact that they are multiples of one format is a nod to the theme of the show, but I didn’t take it super literal.

SXH - What is your take on commercial art?

ML – My introduction to commercial art was through skateboard graphics. Doing art for a client (skateboard company) was part of it from the beginning for me. It was something I aspired to do. So I guess my take is that I feel lucky, in addition to my artwork, to be able to create work that serves another purpose.

SXH -How do you plan to celebrate the holidays?

ML – Visit with friends around Portland and my Mom in North Carolina.

Here is another look at one name that will surely make a huge impact at “Bailout,” Andrew Pommier. Located in Vancouver Pommier’s unique approach will add a defining part of the exhibition we have compiled and that is only day away from opening. Take a look at Andrew’s thoughts on the show and commercial art below.

SLAMXHYPE – Please introduce yourself and what is your background?

ANDREW POMMIER – My name is Andrew Pommier, I’m a drawer and painter and an artist for hire. I graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design with a major in Drawing and Painting. I currently live in Vancouver BC. and I have been here for about 5 years. At present live in a downtown drafty coach house with my girlfriend and a cat.

SXH – Can you tell us a bit about your artwork for the show?

AP – The drawing came about as just a funny maybe even stupid image I came up with one day while riding my bike around. When I was contacted about this show this seemed to be the most fitting image for the show. The nice thing was it was an idea I had already thought about so it didn’t get labored down with the pressure of doing something

SXH – How did you interperate and execute the title “Bailout”?

AP – The thinking about this piece is that the mouse costumed figure is on a lunch break from his job as a mascot in an amusement park so he’s grabbing an instant soup. The scene is in a time where iconic characters have merged together. The Hello Kitty head could be his mask or another mascots. It is meant to be unclear.

SXH – What is your take on commercial art?

AP – It pays my bills.

SXH – How do you plan to celebrate the holidays?

AP – My girlfriend and I are driving up to my mom’s for the holidays

As part of our preview to “Bailout,” a group exhibition we have curated under the new ‘Solidified by SLAMXHYPE’ project we are profiling each artist involved. Bringing together a host of names to feature at this exciting milestone for all involved here at SLAMXHYPE with the exhibition opening first on December 6, then for a second time on December 11 at the Continental Gallery in Downtown LA. We have kicked off the profile’s with Jeff McMillan, a name renown in the LA area and will certainly add a unique dimension to the show, while we also give you a glimpse of one of Jeff’s works for the exhibition.

SLAMXHYPE – Please introduce yourself and what is your background?

JEFF MCMILLAN – My name is Jeff McMillan, I’m a freelance artist/painter/illustrator. I graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 2004 with a BFA in Illustration. I enjoy odd topics and figure I should paint them. I live and work in Long Beach, CA.

SXH – Can you tell us a bit about your artwork for the show?

JM – I did one piece on a fictional blue demon character that spits gold that lives up in the himalayas, he fancies a middle eastern boy scout uniform and hangs out with a dodo bird, he is the demon of want. I did two other pieces that comment on the identities of fast food chains.

SXH – How did you interperate and execute the title “Bailout”?

JM – I did one piece that comments on the act of being bailed out and what kind of strings are attached. The knight in shinning armour is a mysterious blue demon boy that spits out gold. He provides and we take, but there is always a price.

I did two other pieces that show the dark underbelly of the fast food chains, when people are pinching pennies they go for cheap food ex. “McDonalds” basically the monopolization of what to eat when times are tough.

SXH – What is your take on commercial art?

JM – Some of it is very cool, and some of it is very lame, it depends on what your purpose is. In the end, if your still doing it for the right reasons then it’s fine.

SXH – How do you plan to celebrate the holidays?

JM – Relaxing then stressing then relaxing, I’m not sure if it’s in that order.
