D.I.Y. AMERICA is a new films series put together by Wieden+Kennedy’s new WK Entertainment iniative, WKE is a content creation platform, a positive move from the advertising agency with the future of advertising headed directly towards content and its intergration and engagement. WKE calls upon Aaron Rose, good friend of SLAMXHYPE and regular The New Order Magazine columnist, to create a series of short films, as stated, entitled D.I.Y. AMERICA. In the legacy of the great Beautiful Losers documentary, the films focus on the street’s impact on art, and the ‘Do it yourself’ philosophy behind our current era of art. Already loaded onto the site are films showcasing Os Gemeos and Swoon, and a mini series called ‘Skate and Create’.

Beautiful Losers celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation

In the early 1990’s a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes “in” as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today’s youth.

“Rapidly emerging as the hot spot for emerging street and urban artists, Brazil recently flexed its artistic muscles once again in a massive show titled Transfer.

Santander Cultural, the biggest art space in Porto Alegre, Brazil, opened its doors for Transfer, the exhibition showcasing street art with photos, videos, live performances, independent rock, skateboard related art (and actual skating!) underground comics, and fanzine art from the last two decades. Transfer also included original artwork and installations from international acclaimed Brazilian artists with roots in urban culture.”

Some of the finest names in Brazilian art like Herbert Baglione, Nunca, Titi Freak, and Bruno 9li, along with favourites here on SlamxHype from the US like Barry McGee, Evan Hecox, and Todd James all had works on showcase at Transfer. Constructing a very unique mix or works, “the show definitely solidifies Brazil as a creative force to be reckoned with.”

Aaron Rose and the cast of Beautiful Losers and their close friends have put together an amazing program lasting through the next month in LA, NY and SF. Personally, I think this is one of the coolest projects I have seen in sometime, a chance for kids to learn and hear from the worlds best, as part of workshops linked alongside Public Schools and Youth Mentoring Programs. Think back to when you were younger and imagine how great it would have been to have learnt about Zine Making from Aaron Rose, Sneaker Design from Jesse Leyva or Drawing with Geoff McFetridge. There are 30 classes in total, and started with great success a few weeks ago. You may have even heard of the project already, through their charity shoe auction with Nike. Check out some of the upcoming dates with more additional information below.

Statement of Purpose: Working with public school art programs and youth mentoring programs, MAKE SOMETHING!! workshops invite local youth to experience creative learning in a non-traditional setting. Workshops focus on subjects such as painting, sculpture, photography, tattoos, music, animation, zines and assorted other subjects that relate to DIY (Do It Yourself) culture.  The walls of each “classroom” display many of the works created on-site, and will hence become an ever-evolving gallery of young ideas in artistic practice.

With much talk surrounding the impressive Beautiful Losers documentary film, it is welcoming news Nike have come on board with a series of Dunk Highs. Having already seen four designs put together with some insane high resolution imagery emblazed on the upper featuring some of the artists work who feature in the film. What is even better is that 32 pairs have been produced in total and they will be auctioned off on eBay to raise funds for the Children’s Aid Society with the sneakers going on the block on August 24. A few days ago we gave you a look at the Beautiful Losers exhibition in Tokyo, which featured some of the biggest names in the arts, fashion and design industry. Here is a look at the exhibition in New York, which also showcased a series of Nike One-off Dunk Highs that were made to celebrate the release of the film, each featuring prints of photographs from the film.

“Beautiful Losers is a feature documentary film directed by Aaron Rose, that celebrates the independent and D.I.Y. spirit that unified a loose-knit group of American artists who emerged from the underground youth subcultures of skateboarding, graffiti, punk rock and hip-hop. The documentary tells the story of how a group of outsiders with little or no formal training and almost no conception or interest of the inner workings of the art world ended up having an incredible impact on the worlds of art, fashion, music, film and pop culture.”
