Mad Men might have spawned a massive trend in fashion and interior design – or certainly brought mid-century design to a larger audience. It’s easy to forget amongst all the stylized direction, this is a show about the advertising industry during a pivotal stage in its history. This new book,’Mid-Century Ads: Advertising in the Mad Men Age’ is a look at the results of their work(well not Don Draper, but the real Don Drapers of the era). Published by Taschen, this is due on shelves March 2012, with Pre-order’s available at Amazon.

Published by Rizzoli and due for release mid November. Naked Hollywood: Weegee in Los Angeles is a book that looks back at the famous and infamous photographs of Weegee.

In 1946, the tabloid photographer known as Weegee relocated from New York City to Los Angeles. Abandoning the grisly crime scenes for which he was best known, Weegee trained his camera instead on Hollywood celebrities, starlets, autograph seekers, and shop-window mannequins, sometimes distorted through trick lenses and multiple exposures. “Now I could really photograph the subjects I liked,” said Weegee of his newfound career in Los Angeles, “I was free.”

Following the photographer’s lead, the exhibition and accompanying catalog documents the lurid, irresistible undersides of stardom, fandom, commerce, and self-promotion in mid-century Los Angeles. In addition to presenting approximately 200 photographs, many of which have never before been shown, the book explores Weegee’s related work as an author, filmmaker, and photo-essayist. Weegee’s photo-book Naked Hollywood (published in hardcover in 1953 and released as a pulp paperback in 1955) provides the inspiration and departure point for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, exhibition and catalog, the latter of which reproduces the pulp paperback edition in its entirety.

Due out in September, this is an absolute must have for all music fans – or anyone interested in this culture. Rizzoli have teamed up with Def Jam to celebrate the first 25 years of the record companies history.

“In association with Def Jam, a celebration of the first twenty-five years of the label that defined hip-hop music and culture, in the words and photographs of its founders and artists. This is the story of Def Jam in the words of its artists and top executives, taken from interviews and seamlessly told as a narrative of no-holds barred recollections and anecdotes, made even more compelling by the fact that Def Jam is one of the last great record labels to enjoy the widespread cultural influence that it does, in light of the increasing digitization of music. Def Jam celebrates a label that defined hip-hop and whose impact extends beyond its incredible roster of recording artists to all areas of culture–fashion, lifestyle, cinema, art–impacting the music business and pop culture forever. In 1984, Def Jam introduced a new kind of music and lifestyle–hip-hop–through aspiring record producer and punk-rocker Rick Rubin and party promoter/artist manager Russell Simmons. It has become the sound of young America, akin to Motown in the sixties. This is the first book to see the label whole: through an oral history woven from interviews (some exclusive) with its founders and artists such as LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, Jay-Z, Ludacris, Ja Rule, Rihanna, Ashanti, and Kanye West, as well as through rare memorabilia from personal archives of the label’s movers and shakers: behind-the-scenes photos, flyers, advertisements, movie posters, album cover art, magazine covers, and press clips from around the world. It also showcases images from some of the best-known photographers of the era, including Albert Watson, Glen E. Friedman, Jonathan Mannion, and Annie Leibovitz. It is designed by Cey Adams, Def Jam’s founding creative director and is an insider’s portrait of the last great record label.”

A comprehensive overview of the most influential photographers of the last century and their finest monographs: Arranged alphabetically, this biographical encyclopedia features every major photographer and photographic artist of the 20th century, from the earliest representatives of classical Modernism right up to the immediate present.

Richly illustrated with facsimiles from books and magazines, this book includes all the major photographers of the last hundred years—especially those who have distinguished themselves with important publications or exhibitions, or who have made a significant contribution to the culture of the photographic image. While most of the 400-plus entries feature North American or European photographers, the scope is worldwide, with significant emphasis on the photography of Japan and Latin America, Africa and China.

Photography in Print A-Z focuses on photographic images and culture, but also features photographers working in “applied” areas, whose work goes beyond the merely illustrative, and is regarded as photographic art or is conserved by major museums, such as Julius Shulman, Terry Richardson, Cindy Sherman, and David LaChapelle, etc.

Featured photographers include:

Ansel Adams, Manuel Álvarez-Bravo, Nobuyoshi Araki, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, David Bailey, Elmer Batters, Peter Beard, Cecil Beaton, Werner Bischof, Guy Bourdin, Bill Brandt, Robert Capa, William Claxton, Anton Corbijn, Robert Doisneau, William Eggleston, Masahisa Fukase, Nan Goldin, Jean-Paul Goude, John Heartfield, Eikoh Hosoe, George Hoyningen-Huene, Seydou Keïta, William Klein, Nick Knight, Neil Leifer, Peter Lindbergh, Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe, Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Helmut Newton, Martin Parr, Irving Penn, Pierre et Gilles, Bettina Rheims, Leni Riefenstahl, Sebastião Salgado, Steve Schapiro, Andres Serrano, Cindy Sherman, Kishin Shinoyama, Jeanloup Sieff, Lord Snowdon, Bert Stern, Larry Sultan, Mario Testino, Wolfgang Tillmans, Ellen von Unwerth, Andy Warhol, Bruce Weber, Weegee, Gary Winogrand and many more.

During my recent visit to Hong Kong, I was agitated after the perfect “8-hour-rest” in the hotel. I decided to pay Tom Hung a visit, I was told this man will take me to everything I would be interested. A little stroll in Milk magazine’s HQ, there stood Tom Hung, a noble gentleman, a brilliant writer, an uncompromising collector.

Tom Hung spent 18 months traveled across China in search of objects that represent what I called the “Made In China for Chinese People” era. There is a long period of time I was sick of hearing the -“ Made In China” cliché. Tom made this beautiful book that brought me to the time when products were designed and made for Chinese people. It is very different from some foreign brand came to a Chinese factory and made exactly what they are selling in its home country, using possibly less quality materials and assume Chinese people will be aspired to anything western.

Tom Hung’s “ Made in China” book is a collection of product that was produced from the 50s to 80s. From everyday household products, toys, and fashion to music instruments. Each chapter tells you the historical significant of the object.

Tom’s office is cluttered with magazines and some of his objection of heritage objects.

I wish I can buy this very first issue of Japanese magazine “Relax” off him, dated back September 1999 with its original name “ Relucks”.

All Gone has moved online for 2009. Since 2006 Michael Dupouy and his LaMJC team have compiled their annual look at street culture product in the form of All Gone. With a strong focus on presentation and photographer, the team pick out their favourite items released throughout the year and allow us a chance to look back over whats been. All Gone is a great resource to look back on years later too. This year, the archives and the current issue have been presented online for those not able to get their hands on a copy, that said, you need to get a hard cover copy to keep on the book shelf, its a must have. Check out All Gone online here.

Richard Prince Four Cowboys Book is the coming together of four of Richard Prince’s Cowboy prints are reproduced in brilliant colour at the centre of this large-scale publication. The double spreads of luminous American landscapes are re-photographed, cropped and re-appropriated images of original Marlboro Country iconography. For Gordon Burn, in his accompanying essay, Prince presents a new way of reading these images. He examines how the artist has deconstructed the efforts of lighting, costume and make-up used in the production of hyper-masculine cowboys. Burn dissects the implications of nostalgia for a commodified, advertised Americana and discusses prince’s interest in multiplicity and the uncanny
