Cassette Playa and Carri Munden continues to evolve, leaving its Fall/Winter 2010 “Neu Romance” Collection in a very different place to its previous collections. That said, while aesthetically the collection is much more muted, the philosophy which has made Carri Munden one of the most influential people in fashion today stays the same, its all about innovation and finding something new.

Cassette Playa uses a hyperactive, mixed-up variety of images, ideas and reference points, but has created a coherent identity over the past few years by presenting them in a way that remains readable. Their multi-layered prints, reminiscent of cut and pasted web graphics, and the use of ancient symbols in their designs, are references to visual languages new and old and demonstrate the importance of communication in their work. The presentation of their AW10/11 capsule collection at London Fashion Week in a “live Augmented Reality performance” further explored the possibilities for fashion as communication by introducing wearable AR.

The project was realised with help from the Digital Fashion Studio at the London College of Fashion, which developed the software behind the presentation. Rather than a standard 2D barcode, their program recognised the rune-like symbols placed on the clothing, triggering 3D animations as each of the models posed in front of a video camera. The audience then saw a mixed reality on-screen as a series of CG additions – evoking the show’s themes of violence, knowledge and emotion – appeared in realtime, adorning the models’ avatars with helmets, new faces, and flashes of shape and colour.

Cassette Playa will continue to explore their intention to “make real life more like a computer game”, and there are plans for some form of release of their app. Until then, we’ll just have to keep holding up magazine pages to our webcams, and waiting for Tron Legacy.

If I’m being honest I’m not a fan of this look (although if I’m being totally honest that’s probably because I’m too old for it!), however, this is the really great thing about Carri Munden, like all great creative minds she has the power to invoke a strong reaction with her work. Love it or loathe it, most people have some kind of opinion about Cassette Playa, there is little middle ground.  These days when everyone and their brother is rocking a tastefully restrained chambray shirt thats a pretty rare thing.

Cassette Playa continue to set a positive and refreshing movement in the scene, with an approach largely incomparable. Here is the first look at the labels Spring/Summer 2010 collection entitled “Power Drift Nation” which features a fantasy land of design with Carri Munden referring to the collection as “dune gone dubstep”. Otherwise the signature feel of Cassette Playa is in tact with the combination of psychadellic colors and interesting textures. Carri Munden of Cassette Playa is preparing to make a splash in Tokyo with a special event on November 7. Vanity will present this night that will feature a host of renowned Japanese DJ’s in addition to a special guest. Nike, Phenomenon, Faline and Drop will also come into play as this event will certainly be a night remember at Le Baron de Paris.
