Skin is the amalgamation of contributions from some of the biggest names in the art world such as Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons and Raymond Pettibon, guided by the keen eye of director Ryan Hope. The film marks the launch of the first issue of Garage Magazine, presenting a visual essay that explores tattoo culture as high art.

Damien Hirst continues to make a huge impression on a huge scale in a controversial manner, and this latest installation at Los Angeles’ Gagosian Gallery makes for more notable news. Hirst was just one of a globally coordinated showing at all 11 Gagosians worldwide including New York, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Rome, Athens, Geneva, and Hong Kong. This comprehensive collection of works that is focused on his spot paintings consists of upwards of 300 borrowed pieces from 150 collectors from some 20 countries. In addition to what is on show at the gallery, The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 is also subject of an impressive catalog with works dating back to 1986 and featuring essays by “Museum of Modern Art curator Ann Temkin, cultural critic Michael Bracewell, and art historian Robert Pincus-Witten as well as a conversation between Damien Hirst, Ed Ruscha and John Baldessari.”

Gagosian Gallery will play host to Damien Hirst’s exhibition The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 from January 12th at all 11 of their locations. The Gallery has just launched a competition where if you can visit each of the 11 locations you’ll receive a signed spot print by Damien Hirst, dedicated personally to you. A pretty big task, but a pretty decent prize. This initiative comes in addition to the iPad App for the same highly anticipated exhibition.

Damien Hirst’s name is synonymous in the contemporary art scene and continues to lead the way when we talk about pop art. Opening on January 12, Hirst will be showcasing his complete collection of Spot Paintings which date back to 1986 in two separate galleries. Hirst explains to the L.A. Times that the series is “a battle between the machine made and man-made. From a distance they look machine made, and then on closer inspection you can see trace of the human hand, pencil lines, and [compass] holes.” Amongst the works will be a small availability to purchase with the majority of the works on showcase will be provided by private collectors making this a must see.

November 8th see’s the London launch of Damien Hirst and Flea’s collaboration to benefit Silverlake Conservatory of Music. The Spin Bass Guitars by Damien Hirst and Flea, the bass player from The Red Hot Chili Peppers are numbered to just 125 editions and come with matching cases featuring the same artwork. There are multi-coloured and Black and White versions available at a cost of £10,000.

All guitars are signed by Flea and Damien Hirst on the back with the edition number punched on the base of the neck and the Hirst-Flea logo on the headstock.

Flea established Silverlake Conservatory of Musicin 2011 with his childhood friend, Keith Barry.
Ryan Hope’s debut feature, Skin, is a documentary that tests the boundaries of art and the human body, Skin is a dark, stylish examination of tattoo culture as high art.

Featuring contributions from Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons and Raymond Pettibon and in association with Dasha Zhukova’s Garage Magazine, the film is a beautiful visual essay from the frontiers of contemporary British art.

This project kicked off back in May, when Ryan Hope was approached by Dasha Zhukova – philanthropist, fashion editor and partner of Britain’s most famous oligarch, Roman Abramovich. Dasha was starting a new venture, a magazine called Garage that would combine her dual passions of art and fashion in a single, unique publication. A fresh, ambitious concept was needed to mark the launch of the magazine, something that would embody the focus of Garage and get people talking.

A groundbreaking idea was devised. It was an idea that would combine art and fashion in a succinct, original statement. This idea was based around the biggest names in contemporary art working on a new kind of canvas – creating art in a way that had never been done before. The artists were Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Raymond Pettibon, Jake & Dinos Chapman and Richard Prince. The canvas was human flesh. And so the project was born. It just needed someone to capture it all on camera.

Enter Ryan Hope. As a director who regularly blurs the lines between fashion, art, and music, Ryan was a perfect fit for the project. More than this, he was the person that could take it to the next level. What began as a series of unconventional artworks soon flourished into a feature-length, documentary exploration of the project, focusing specifically on the subjects receiving the tattoos – their lives, dreams and motivations. The film itself is much more than the sum of its (rather unusual) parts. It is a visually rich, deeply immersive journey into the lives of those seeking to redefine their individuality. In the same way that the tattooist’s gun becomes an extension of the contemporary artists’ creativity, the camera in turn adds another layer to the project, becoming a further piece of this complex, indefinable project.

Beginning in London before crossing America coast to coast, Ryan followed the lives of five individuals whose bodies would become canvases for these seminal works of art. Jack, AJ, Leaf, Shauna and Conrad were five very different people, living in different parts of the world. The one thing they had in common was that their lives were about to be changed forever. Shooting on the road, Ryan left London for New York and eventually Los Angeles. On his journey he visited some of the best tattoo parlours in the business, including The Family Business in London, Kings Avenue in New York and Gold Rush in Costa Mesa, California. Here he saw the work of some of the world’s foremost contemporary artists etched on human skin by master tattoo artists Mo Coppoletta, Mike Rubendall and Lindsey Carmichael, respectively. The culmination of the trip was a photoshoot for the debut issue of Garage Magazine, fittingly conducted by renowned designer and photographer Hedi Slimane. Ryan’s journey and the resulting film were made possible by the generosity of Christie’s, the world’s leading art business.

‘we are here for a good time, not a long time.’ – damien hirst

Renowned English artist Damien Hirst has recently completed two pieces entitled ‘Beautiful Sunflower’ and ‘Beautiful Fractional Ssunflower’ commissioned specifically for the Triennale di Milano. The Panerai paintings are made with the technique of spin painting. dozens of watch components from Florentine manufacturer Officine Panerai watches, with each time pieces assembled upon the canvas surfaces. Hirst refers to the death of kronos and the triumph of kairos by not using the hands on the watches while within these two-dimensional works, time is reduced to its circular quintessence, to its perpetual and unmeasurable motion.

Curated by Silvana Annicchiarico and Jan Van Rossem, with installation concept by spanish designer Patricia Urquiola and entitled “‘o’clock” the exhibition consists of more than 70 ‘timepieces’ that explore the concept of time in their work.
