Here is a great insight into a great exhibition curated by Sonia Taborda for Art Basel, featuring three of the most influential artists of this generation. The Trilogy Exhibition features works from Ryan McGinley, Dan Colen and the late Dash Snow. None of the works on display are actually for sale, but shown is an entirely private collection by two Portuguese collectors. Open until December 8 at the The Ring Art Center one piece of work by each artist will be auctioned off on Saturday, with all proceeds going to charity.

It was just last week that OHWOW launched its latest show in LA, a gathering of key artists who have been a part of the Post 9-11 art scene. The progress and climb of this group of artists throughout this era has been massive, the result a huge show in terms of its profile around the world. The exhibition was about much more than just showing off their success, it was about remembering how important the scene and friendships have been throughout this time. Exclusively for W Magazine, Dan Colen and Aaron Bondaroff discuss their personal stories of the time. An extract is below, read the rest here.

DAN COLEN: We all met around 9/11. We were just kids then. Ten years ago, I was living with Ryan [McGinley] on East 7th Street. It was the kind of apartment where a lot of people congregated. This was when we were becoming close with Aaron. We kind of naturally fell in together. It was pretty fluid. But still, I think when 9/11 happened we hadn’t really become close yet—not like the way we were with Dash [Snow] and Agathe [Snow]. And Terence [Koh] was just showing up around then. Pretty soon after that, Nate [Lowman] came around. He was just another kid. I didn’t know that he was the artist Nate Lowman. It’s funny, I knew of Nate Lowman the artist, and I actually thought he was a mid-career artist. I thought it was the best work I’d seen in so long, and I figured it was some 40 year-old man …

AARON BONDAROFF: I think it was more at Agathe’s apartment in the Lower East Side where she was actually doing those dinner happenings and bringing a lot of people together. I think that was really the moment where we all kind of got together.

DC: That’s right. Agathe was really close with Nate.

AB: Agathe’s mother had a restaurant on Prince Street called La Poème, and I saw her hanging out there a lot with Dash. I realized that a lot of these guys were connected to each other. They started hanging out in the basement of this restaurant.

DC: In 2003, Ryan and I moved out of 7th Street to Canal Street. And Dash was on Avenue C, which was a pretty big spot too. We spent a lot of time there. But when we moved down to Canal Street, Maccarone Gallery was down the block from us, so I started seeing Nate around again. [Lowman is represented by the gallery.] I thought maybe he was an installer there or something. I kind of approached him one day at the local café just to say what’s up. I asked him if he worked at the gallery. And he was like, ‘No, I show there.’ And I was like, ‘You’re Nate Lowman, whoa.’ That’s how we officially met. Then we got introduced to Adam McEwen and Aaron Young. And Michelle [Maccarone] moved her gallery, and Terence moved into her building. So then there was this whole thing around Canal Street—Terence had this entire building; Ryan and I were up the block; Nate was kind of living with us; Aaron Young’s studio was right over there [in Soho]; and Dash had moved to the Bowery then. So we were all in this really tight vicinity. Aaron’s store [aNYthing] opened up down there, too.

Following our initial preview, here is a look inside Dan Colen’s latest exhibition entitled “Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are!”. Always doing things in his own unique way, this installation consists of some outlandish pieces from imagery of the artist himself to canvases resembling bird droppings or a slew of chewing gum stuck, now a signature of Colens work. With this exhibition dedicated to his late friend Dash Snow, someone who he thrived of at the peak of the Downtown New York scene over the last decade Colen has continued the path and this makes for a must see if in the area.

OHWOW is pleased to announce Post 9-11, a group exhibition distinct of a decade and definitive of an era. The work of the nine artists represented (Dan Colen, Terence Koh, Hanna Liden, Nate Lowman, Adam McEwen, Ryan McGinley, Agathe Snow, Dash Snow, and Aaron Young) defies categorization in a particular movement or style, yet poignantly references a collective history through works of painting, photography, sculpture, and installation.

Practicing in the new millenium, these New York based-artists, friends and collaborators, are brought together by a sense of community and shared history. Their relationships with each other cemented fully over the last ten years – a decade spent sharing ideas, studios, apartments, and themselves. This intimate connection not only informed their respective practices, it also influenced their creative progressions. The loose society of downtown New York provides affirmation that the bond created making art together proved a powerful factor in the voice and vision of these artists.

Creating imagery, which at times expressed a rebellious spirit and freedom, also responds to their experience of these ten tumultuous years. The Post 9-11 artists’ work runs the gamut: defiant, irreverent and destructive; sublime, utopian, and filled with emotion. Two former studio mates and room mates, Dan Colen and Ryan McGinley exhibit the polarity. A painting of tar and feathers adhered to canvas by Dan Colen, Blop!, 2011, appears chaotic and abject. It references the barbaric and archaic act of punishment and interjects a strong sense of materiality with the use of unconventional media. Conversely, Ryan McGinley’s photograph, Tom (Golden Tunnel), 2010, is a surreal and cinematically arranged image of a nude, male figure in a train tunnel. It is as transcendent in its ethereal treatment as it is existential in its choreography and open-ended narrative.

These brief examples articulate that as a whole, the work in this exhibition is effective in its ability to translate the myriad reactions possible in light of a connected reality. No two experiences can be exact in their expression, however, their aesthetic approaches, although disparate, present a visual memoir of a defining era. Reluctant in yielding to definition, yet decidedly American, Post 9-11 characterizes the mood and complexities of a decade.

After the well crowded (big up Oslo) one hour artist talk between curator Hanne Beate Ueland and Dan Colen. Aaron Bondaroff aka A-ron gave the audience a crowd pleasing opening speech with an hilarious inside introduction to the ups and downs living the life on Lower East Side, NYC. Together with the big NYC posse that came along Dan Colen and A-ron presented a slideshow of pics from earlier NYC days in a romanticist way to the already cracked up listeners.

To kick off the exhibition the New York band I.U.D (Lizzie Bougatsos and Sadie Laska) sat the right mode to open the show. The exhibition where his canvases take us from the artist’s bedroom and introspective self-portraits, imaginary and real-life figures exist within the same magical realism vi non-specific hang-out spots, littered with pigeon shit, chewing gum, graffiti and basketball backboards was well appreciated by the crowd. A good 700 people came by during the opening night, to make it a very successful first day in Oslo for Dan Colen.

colette have provided the platform for another well known creative mind to showcase his talents with this very interesting installation. Dan Colen has creating this piece of work comprised exclusively of bicycle entitled “En Grève” showing the intertwined bikes “on strike”. On showcase for one week only, the meaning of the installation refers to the bike unwilling to move and being unleashed into society and realising their potential as transportation in Paris.

Along with Marc Newsom opening his “Transport” exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery, renowned New York native Dan Colen will open an installation on the highly coveted walls. Entitled “Poetry” perhaps we can expect some romance from this latest collection of works from an artist who often goes to the boundaries with his work. Dan Colen “Poetry” Exhibition opens on September 25 at Gagosian Gallery.
