Artist David Choe has created a lot of talk recently in the wake of receiving $200 million thanks to Facebook’s $5 billion IPO. If that wasn’t enough, Choe has now appeared on the Howard Stern show to go into detail about the recent events while talking extensively about his background, interest in gambling, sex and above all else his loss of privacy at the hands of Facebook’s IPO.

David Choe to Receive $200 Million Payout from Facebook

David Choe made a decision in 2005 which will change his life forever. The artist decided to take a stake in Facebook rather than monetary payment at the time for his commissioned artwork at the companies HQ. While its unknown as to the status of the shares Choe received, what has been revealed is that Choes shares in Facebook, after the companies IPO announcement valued at $5billion USD, are valued at $200 million USD. Stay tuned for the details as they come to hand, and probably more interestingly what is to become of David Choe and his career.

David Choe Paints Facebook Headquarters

Street Artist David Choe has been commissioned by Facebook to help decorate their new headquarters in Menlo Park, California. The artist was asked to do the same in 2006 to the social network giant’s original location, and a similar treatment is applied this time too.

Come and see Director; Harry Kim’s film, “Dirty Hands” which documents eight years of the life of David Choe. The film premiere’s in L.A and Sunset 5 starting today and runs until May 6th 2010.

“An outlaw artist whose violent, phantasmagoric, and unapologetically sexual work is both highly controversial and deeply challenging, David Choe rose from notorious street artist and porn magazine illustrator to prolific painter, muralist, and graphic artist – but his evolution from underground tagger to art-world darling was just about the farthest thing from a smooth ride imaginable. Los Angeles-based artist Choe lives his life as unrestrained as humanly possible, and while that’s a truly unique way to find inspiration it can make life somewhat difficult at times: In addition to serving multiple jail sentences and battling addiction, Choe has also wrestled pygmies in the heart of the Congo and gone hunting for dinosaurs.”

The World Premiere of Harry Kim’s long awaited documentary film Dirty Hands opens for 1 week only at Sunset 5. Head to the cinema tonight and catch up with Harry Kim (Film Maker/Director) and David Choe (subject of the film) between 9:30pm – 10:00pm. Nuart Preview

Nuart, one of our favorite international street art festivals, is about to kick off its 2009 installment. This year sees some of the best of Brooklyn fly to Norway, including Swoon, David Choe, Chris Stain (above), Logan Hicks, Judith Supine, Brad Downey, Leon Reid IV, Graffiti Research Lab, Ben Wolf and Skewville. Official opening night is September 10th.

Festival founder and director Martyn Reed talked to SXH about some of the reasons behind his decision to spotlight Brooklyn:

“Working with Chris Stain last year focused my attention back on the community roots of this scene (for want of a better word): Swoon, Just Seeds, Brooklyn Arts Project, Wooster Collective. This idea of community and selflessly putting work on the streets for free was really the main reason behind wanting to support and contribute to it.”

Leon Reid IV (of Darius and Downey fame) is the first artist to land in Stavanger. He will be giving a public talk tomorrow afternoon at Rogaland Kunstkolen. Walrus TV Artist Upper Playground/Juxtapoz Magazine U.S. Tour

In 2008, Juxtapoz Magazine and Upper Playground asked David Choe, Alex Pardee, Saber & Retna to paint their way across the United States. Traveling the country from Washington D.C. to the Bay Area with spray cans in their hands and cameras following, they bombed, brushed, and painted, leaving a swath of color and creativity in their wake. This short documentary piece, set to the music of Cutsoquick, captures the artists as they hit the streets collaborating on huge pieces and connecting with fans and admirers of their art from all walks of life. Hollywood’s Carmichael Gallery played host to a group show of epic proportions last night. The list of artists showing is a who’s who of contemporary art. Adam Neate, Antony Micallef, Banksy, Barry McGee, Bast, D*face, Dalek, David Choe,David Choong Lee, Faile, Herbert Baglione, Ian Francis, Kaws, Nick Walker, Paul Insect, Shepard Fairey, Sixeart, Skullphone, Space Invader, Swoon, Will Barras. Arrested Motion put it best “ Visiting the gallery was like seeing a modern day museum retrospective of the last five years in urban art. Truly amazing.”

The show lasts till May 28th and can’t be missed!

“Abraham Obama” is a humorous and provocative look at an unprecedented political art movement. A campaign to change the visual landscape of America yields a new President, and ushers in a new collective consciousness for America’s people. Ron English gathers a crew of professional pranksters and hits the road on a grass-roots campaign to make public art and promote Obama’s campaign for the Presidency.

“Abraham Obama” takes us on an unforgettable ride as the stories of Ron English unfold alongside musicians and artists such as Shepard Fairey, Jack Medicine, David Choe, Sam Flores, The Date Farmers, Will.I.Am, Morgan Spurlock, DJ Z-Trip and several others. Directed by Kevin Chapados, and Produced by Daniel Lahoda and Ron English.

The feature length documentary will make its debut at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco on Sunday, February 15th at 12:30pm, with a second showing on Wednesday, February 18th at 7:30pm.
