Interested in texture, layering, and the resulting tension between opposing planes, Chicago-based artist Dzine’s monumental work is replete with “visual excess.” Having gotten his start in graffiti, many defining elements of his current practice reflect the impact of that early interest. The bright colors, flat abstract shapes, and massive scale of his work speak directly to his roots in street art. However, the form of his work has evolved drastically, resulting in an elaborate combination of installation, painting, and sculpture that work in unison to present a “kaleidoscopic and meticulous world.” Dzine’s work has been exhibited internationally, displayed in galleries and museums in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Korea, The Netherlands, and throughout the United States. Art Basel is great, but almost too good, with so many shows on its hard to ensure you get to all, and you’re bound to miss out on some of the better ones. This was the case with DZINE’s show at Bass Museum of Art. One of my favourite artists today, DZINE (Carlos Rolon) manages to blend sub cultures and the streets with fine art like no other, his amazing custom lowrider bike’s are some of the most amazing pieces I’ve seen in Galleries.

“For his exhibition at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami, Dzine created a new custom lowrider tricycle inspired by the concept of Ghost Bike memorials. A ghost bike is a bicycle painted white and chained to a pole near the place where a cyclist has been hurt or killed by a car as a roadside memorial. Dzine’s Ghost Bike is a tricycle painted white and fitted with Swarovski crystals, mirror, fabric, video and audio. The film, conceived by Dzine and Joey Garfield, and edited by Dan Zabinski, consists of film footage Dzine found in his fathers house, and features music by Héctor Lavoe.

Additional works on display are, among others, “The Love Below (Custom Speaker Box Chandelier)”, a customized chandelier with Swarovski crystals fabric, light bulbs, wire and audio; “Across the Universe”, a wall installation with mirror, Swarovski crystals and turntable; and “Infinite Mararishi (after Yajoi Kusama)”, a colorful installation with glass beads, crystals, and mirrors.”

Currently on exhibit at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami is an exhibition by Chicago based artist, Dzine (Carlos Rolon). From site-specific wall installations to his “pimped-out” Cadillac Fleetwood to shimmering Swarovski Crystals, Dzine’s energetic manifestation of colors, patterns, textures, and sounds fuse into a modern phenomenon that reveals a vibrant mixture of street-art, op-art, and Chicano “Lowrider” culture which he describes as “custom car culture on steroids“, embracing the cultural paradigm of his work around the Chicano Lowrider culture as “creating an amazing piece, not for money, but [for] pride, ego and identity.”

Former graffiti artist, Dzine has been able to bolster the semantics of this genre by stretching the boundaries further and bringing never seen before products to the table. His use of precious stones, neon-lights, and motorized machinery has opened up a unique vernacular to contemporary art. The exhibition will run through till February 21, 2010. The show unites the worlds of art, philanthropy and sport in a unique celebration of human potential inspired by Lance and dedicated to the fight against cancer. “It will project hope, strength and commitment to millions and carry the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign all over the world. I am humbled by the effort and energy given by so many to bring STAGES to life.” said Lance Armstrong.

Nike continues to be a long time supporter of both Lance Armstrong and the Lance Armstrong Foundation, creating the yellow wristband in 2004, which gave global visibility to the foundation. To date there are over 70 million bands that have been worn by supporters throughout the world.

“We’re taking the LIVESTRONG message, which is already in the global lexicon, and giving it a different type of energy and voice. At the same time we’re combining the fight against cancer with sports and art to create a larger community that is aware and engaged in the fight against cancer,” said Mark Parker, CEO & President, Nike Inc.

The show opens to the public on Friday, July 17th following a preview today for invited guests at the world renowned Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Paris. It will also travel to the United States this fall. All work is available for purchase with proceeds directly benefiting the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

In addition to the simultaneous shows by Chris Johanson and Swoon at Deitch, they are also set to present the first New York exhibit by Chicago’s Carlos Rolon, aka Dzine during September. Dzine’s tricked-out bikes, boats and cars garnered a lot of attention at this year’s Venice Biennale and Art Basel Miami so expect to see a similar showing this time round.

The Beautiful Struggle opens on Sunday, September 7th and runs until October 18, 2008.
