Ed Templeton opened his “Teenage Kissers” Exhibition at Half Gallery in NYC’s Lower East Side last week. The exhibition is great bookend to his previous “Teenage Smokers” exhibition a few years back, as well as his other major shows in Europe. A book is also available showcasing the exhibition works which we looked into last week, check it out here.

Highly regarded artist Ed Templeton has just compiled a new body of works for an impressive new book entitled Teenage Kisses. Published by Seems with great distinction, each piece of work is just like the title suggests while Templetons raw imagery proves more than impressive.

…Today in the Flickr generation, photographs of young kids in wild and rebellious situations come a dime a dozen. The internet is chocked full of these images, usually shot and shared between small groups of friends and existing on a myriad of random Tumblr and Facebook pages. Never before in history have we lived in a society where the personal documentation of peoples’ private lives has been so public. However, when Ed Templeton began shooting these photos of young people kissing this was not the case at all. The worldwide web was only in its infancy and the word “blog” had not yet even been invented. Photography of this nature was restricted to few practitioners, and existed in a rarified world young fans and art aficionados. It should be noted that while in today’s climate these images may feel standard, at the time they were being created Templeton was surely an innovator. His images spread through youth culture like wildfire, and in many ways one could blame the young photo-blog explosion partly on the fact that he took these photographs when he did.

For that reason alone, Teenage Kissers should be viewed as a historical volume. As we look at these photographs of young people exchanging awkward kisses we are reminded again of that wonderful uncomfortability that comes with the discovery of young sexuality. Not only do we all remember the feeling of that first clumsy teenage kiss, as mature viewers we can now look at the photos from afar and understand exactly where it’s all going. Like its predecessor, Teenage Kissers is a perfect documentation of this feeling. The photographs are, in many ways, beyond innocence. They brim with humanity in its most raw form and remind us that although some of us have now grown up, we’re still never so far from that first kiss. The basics of our sexual lives are reflected back to us in these images…and no matter how many times we see it, it cannot be denied that there’s a little “Teenage Kisser” in every one of us.

Ed Templeton has played his role in some very impressive projects of late and perhaps this is the most defining. This interview makes for some well worth viewing as Templeton discusses this latest installation of works of his.

Here is a look at the latest publication from artist Ed Templeton, entitled “The Seconds Pass” this book is defined by the style of work we are well accustomed to. Featuring some raw imagery in both black and white, and color from vast themes and locations makes for another great book from an artist already well established. Take a look inside the book below that is available from Seems.

There is a scribble of asphalt and meandering ribbons of concrete tangled all over North America in a contiguous line of material that connects each of us to whomever else is also in contact. I sometimes marvel at this, walking from my front door and standing on the asphalt looking down at its grimy blackness, wishing I could rest my ear down on it and hear everything like the Indians in an old western film. The pavement I’m standing on is connected to other pavement, concrete, or steel to almost anywhere I can think of. Certainly everywhere you can drive to. Someone in Burnt Church, Tennessee is standing on gravel that is connected by touch to my street, just like someone is in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I can be in New York City in 3 days from my home in the suburban sprawl of Orange County, California without ever touching the earth.

The Seconds Pass…

…was the starting line of an old friend’s poem. The line was the seconds pass / like hands thru glass. I always loved those lines. In my head I always replaced hands with eyes. It puts a name on those moments when you stare into space, lapsing into a daydream, and the world is just spinning by. Sometimes I step out of those moments, only a little, just enough to think in my head those words – the seconds pass. Like an inner tick-tock, taking note that everything is slipping away, especially time.

In America the automobile is omnipresent, and in Southern California cars are life-blood. You are always in a car here. I came to driving late, not getting my license until I was 18. Before that I had my girlfriend, Deanna to chauffeur me around. As a young skateboarder, I used cars to explore every last tendril of road I could find in search of skate spots and experienced much of my adolescent sex-life and adventures inside of a car. I like when I hear someone on the television call a busy street a major artery, like the roads are veins bringing life to the far reaches, with most of humanity lurking within reach of that life-giving connectivity. The tips of your toes are Fairbanks, the capillaries the Dalton Highway. For the preceding 22 years I have been a passenger all over the world, shooting pictures through the glass at those ephemeral winks, those trifles and curios that one races past, never enough time to stop.

And what better social study is there than driving and looking? It’s like taking a core sample from the social fabric, each layer exposing a new understanding of truth. My drive to Los Angeles takes me through streets lined with strip malls anchored with liquor stores and bail bond sellers, Colt 45 billboard sails, and 99-cent stores with brighter-than-daylight fluorescent lighting. Five minutes later I am passing high-end hipster sneaker shops and women in short dresses flittering about with a payload of shopping bags. A group of bearded Jewish men huddle on a corner in black suits and hats. You can look through the window right next to you at a person immersed in the enclosed world of their car, and secretly watch them live, rock out to music, talk on the phone, put on make-up or sit at a red light with thoughts elsewhere. The way people act depending on their various trips as they walk down the sidewalk or wait at a bench. The continuous remorseless traffic – each car bound for some purpose, going somewhere for some reason, all day long 24 hours a day in every city of the world. The section of street you happen to be on, the block, the intersection is a microcosm for all of humanity. All of this just rolls out perpetually in front you as you roll by the man-made scenery, colors, words, all coming into focus then fading back onto the horizon.

For two weeks in April, Elms Lesters will be hosting DRINKING THE KOOL-AID by Ed Templeton, a non-selling exhibition presented by Emerica and Slam City Skates.

Ed Templeton (1972, Orange County, USA) is hard to define. At once professional skateboarder, owner of skateboard company ToyMachine, photographer, illustrator and painter, Ed’s work merges these activities on a level and democratic field of subculture art. With origins in the skateboard and punk scenes, his work reflects the DIY aesthetic and endeavor of these cultures, which is furthered by having no formal training as an artist.
Templeton’s use and mingling of multiple mediums (painting and/or writing on photographs, etc.) demonstrates his non-hierarchical approach, whilst his subject matter in turn reflects an non-judgmental perspective of his surroundings. With subject matter not only delving into his personal relationships, but also seeking the outside streets and the activities surrounding the skate culture, Templeton’s images contextualise a broader vision of contemporary youth culture.

In this show “Drinking the Kool-Aid”, that opens on April 6 Templeton offers a poignant selection of his photographs from the last 15 years.

In addition the artist will be on hand for a book signing event on Saturday April 10th, where Ed Templeton will be signing copies of three books with ‘DRINKING THE KOOL-AID’, ‘THE SECONDS PASS’ and ‘DEFORMER’

MAYA NUKUMIZU. Maya is an artist born in 1982. Since finishing her master’s degree of Kyoto University of Art and Design in 2007, she has been actively creating works. She drew attention to her talent has an undergraduate, winning many awards including the grand prizes of “The 5th ’21st Century Asian Design Competition’” and “ARTBEAT Kyoto 2005″. She was selected to exhibit at “ART AWARD TOKYO 2007″. Her work is highly received as a new type of Japanese artist whose style can be called “NEW POP”. In her work, the subject matter such as pop girls, weapons, combat planes are often drawn and arranged on a geometrically graphic surface. The girls in her work have an almost extreme femininity with rich and long streaming hair, overly long eyelashes, and skin-exposing tightly fitted outfits. They are drawn with weapons as “fighting girls”. Many of the “fighting girls” in Japanimation and in Manga represent a perverted existence, created by men for themselves. The characters by Nukumizu are, on the contrary, created by a woman, for women, positively accepting “the power of woman/femininity”.

YU NAGABA. Yu was born in 1976 in Tokyo. He is a graphics designer, illustrator, and came up with the idea for the character, “Kaeru-Sensei”, which literally means Teacher Frog. He also created graphics for clothes, TV show, websites and more.

MAYA NUKUMIZU. Maya is an artist born in 1982. Since finishing her master’s degree of Kyoto University of Art and Design in 2007, she has been actively creating works.

Unless you’ve been living in a sewer with CHUD for the past few decades, you already know that Ed Templeton is a man who wears many hats—pro skateboarder, company owner, team manager, artist, photographer, husband and many more. Ed started skateboarding in 1985, and turned pro in 1990. After he married his life partner Deanna in 1991, Ed went on to start Toy Machine and an art career in 1993 and worked hard as hell to launch those and all other aspects of his life to stellar heights. Ed is one of very few pro skaters who loves doing interviews, so when you shove a tape recorder in front of him, you know it’s going to be epic. Read it all and peep the photos on the Emerica site.

“Follow Ed Templeton from his house in Huntington Beach, California, to nearby Costa Mesa, and accusations that Orange County is a cultural wasteland gain some credence. The roads are all massive boulevards, lined on both sides by perfectly planned, gated neighborhoods and chock-a-block strip malls filled with nothing but cheap Mexican food, dry cleaners and pawnshops. The median can wall you in for a half mile before a left turn is allowed, and then always and only at a precise 90 degrees. Just driving around here can be soul crushing.

“Templeton was born and raised within this vast grid and, despite all that’s happened in the 36 years since, he refuses to leave. You can argue that he owes his twin careers—a skateboard pro approaching legend status and a fine artist with a growing international following—to this place. You could just as easily argue that he’s earned the right to live in a place that better suits his quirky sensibilities, a place that lacks the troubling personal baggage this one carries. Templeton has these arguments with himself all the time. He’s still not leaving.

“He pulls his Toyota Prius up behind a generic, low-slung warehouse that’s surrounded by square miles of other generic, low-slung warehouses and emerges from the car. Flashes of grey in his beard betray his age and a few extra pounds suggest all the hours he now spends in a studio, but Templeton is otherwise indistinguishable from the teenager who first took to these streets on a skateboard. He takes a board out of the trunk and rolls toward the front door. The muffled sound of urethane and wood colliding with steel and concrete suggests that the place is more interesting than it looks.”
