Eriberto and Estevan Oriol “Like Father Like Son” Exhibition

Carmichael Gallery is pleased to announce Like Father, Like Son, a retrospective survey of works by

renowned Chicano, Los Angeles-based father and son photographers, Eriberto and Estevan Oriol. The

exhibition will comprise twenty-five limited edition prints from each photographer, including black and

white, color, silver gelatin and digital c-prints.

Whilst often distinguished by a complex melange of memory, emotion and intimacy that can manifest

itself in equally terrifying and wonderful forms, the relationship between a parent and his or her child

is a particularly unique human exchange and can hardly be defined in generalized terms. For Eriberto

and Estevan Oriol, who are often cited as two of the most important contemporary documentarians of

urban, hip hop, lowrider and Latino culture, the deep familial tie they share extends into and only serves

to empower the unique nature of their professional relationship and the intense puissance of their work.

Whether viewed together or apart, the Oriols’ photography presents the multitudinous contours of Los

Angeles and urban life through a piercing, visionary lens that lends a fascinating, almost hyperreal layer

to the earthy, often confrontational authenticity of their subject matter.

Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of the Oriols’ oeuvre to date when considered as a whole,

as in Like Father, Like Son, is its ability to complement and contrast the talents and purports of each

photographer. Both are long-time observers of city life and the experiences of its inhabitants; Eriberto,

whose understanding of shape, line and shadow are key features of works such as LA Financial District,

2011, The Thinker, 1974, and Need A Helping Hand, 2000, which define with gut-wrenching elegance

the struggle and strength of the poor and homeless in Downtown Los Angeles and San Diego, form

an effective and deeply affecting concordance with Estevan’s depictions of these communities, who, in

works such as Skid Row Body Bag, 2009, Chestnut Family, 1998, and Pepper’s Shopping Cart, 2011,

combines brutal honesty with rich sagacity to uncover a subtle, fleeting beauty that might otherwise have

disappeared unnoticed.

Other series represented in Like Father, Like Son include the photographers’ varied and illuminating

portrayals of LA’s lowrider culture, dramatized to distinction in Eriberto’s color photograph Las Vegas

Lifestyle Car Club, 2004, and the city’s gang life, exposed in a singularly vulnerable light in Estevan’s

Bullet Holes and Stab Wounds, 2002, and Shaving the Dome, 2008. In addition to these and Estevan’s

portraits of celebrities, including Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Dennis Hopper, both Oriols will present a selection

of their exquisite, oft-touted photographs of LA women, from Eriberto’s Traffic Jam 110 FWY, 2011, to

Estevan’s Erlinda, 2003.

There will be an opening reception for Like Father, Like Son on Saturday, October 1 from 6 to 9pm with

both Eriberto and Estevan Oriol in attendance. The exhibition will run through October 29, 2011.

Celeritas opens today at SURU on Melrose Avenue. The show, hosted by John Hensley and Joe Hahn, features work inspired by motorcycle racing culture. Artists include Barry McGee, Joe Hahn, Mike Shinoda, Mark Dean Veca, Audrey Kawasaki, Stash, Futura, James Jean, Jim Lee, Alex Pardee, Jeff McMillan, Troy Lee, Jesse James, Usugrow, Nathan Cabrera, Dr. Romanelli and Estevan Oriol.

Check out this awesome hand painted Barry McGee Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle, which will be up for auction. All proceeds go to Riders for Health non-profit organization.

SURU is located at 7662 Melrose Avenue. Show runs through August 16th.

This Sunday Suru will host Celeritas – A gallery exhibition and art auction featuring a collected body of work from a phenomenal group of artists who have come together to display their talent in an entirely new way – using motorcycle helmets, motorcycle leathers, and a Suzuki Hyabusa motorcycle as their medium to benefit Riders for Health. 100% of proceeds from the sale of the art benefits Riders for Health; An international non-profit organization.

Former club bouncer and Los Angeles native Estevan Oriol got his start in the entertainment business managing tours for huge artists like “House of Pain” and “Cypress Hill” almost 20 years ago. While globe trotting with them he began his photography career taking flicks of the madness and glitter that surrounds international celebrities. When he was back home in L.A though, it was a much different story. He took his cues from the street life surrounding him. The singular dramatic black and white photos he produces are gripping, beautiful, and authentically menacing portraits of individuals fully immersed in L.A gang lifestyle. Blessed with a talented eye and a hood pass, he takes pictures in places armed with a camera where most tough guys would take a weapon. Offered for the first time to the public for free, in this exclusive interview from The Run Up, Estevan Oriol expresses his thoughts, methods, and views on approaching everyday with the hunger of a hustler who doesn’t know where his next meal will come from.

Juxtapoz is officially 100 issues old, give or take an Erotica issue or three back in the day. But yes, 100 issues old, and we even have a poster included in each issue that has a map of all 100 covers.

Raymond Pettibon on the cover was a clincher, and we wanted to do something a little special/different, so we went with an early ’80’s look, with a great line, “I never want to die” on the front. On the subscriber-only cover, we went with a 2008 piece of Pettibon’s, to give it the simultaneous retrospective/future-looking vibe. Deep thinking. Happy with the results.

Spike Jonze is in, too. Took some time out of his schedule and all the “Where the Wild Things Are” activities to be in. Andy Mueller and Porous Walker made it easy on us.

Camille Rose Garcia, Glen E Friedman, Kevin Ancell, and Coop, all big thanks. Stecyk, good pose.

Sam Bassett, our NYC photo editor, took some amazing shots on his California tour. Sam, nothing like a beach in Half Moon Bay to enjoy the Northern California coast, right? And, Estevan Oriol, our LA photo editor, gave Coop the proper treatment.

At the end of day, all the pieces came together, and it looks good. No sweat.

Renown for capturing the the heart of Los Angeles and documenting the raw side of the city that he holds close to himself. Estevan Oriol has compiled some extensive work for publication Acclaim, as part of their Collab Series. This momentus box set includes a hard copy version of the Estevan Oriol issue of Acclaim magazine which is a must have along with the tee created. Acclaim set to launch the release on October 30 with Espionage in Sydney and The Heist in Melbourne joining the festivities on October 31.

Righteous Kill Exhibition Opens

On Wednesday night SA Studios hosted a VIP tribute event honoring film legends Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in anticipation of their upcoming film together called “Righteous Kill.” Tattooist Mister Cartoon and photographer/director Estevan Oriol designed the film’s poster. The space is filled with Pacino and De Niro’s most iconic film memorabilia, including plasma screens throughout the place showcasing Oriol and Cartoon’s favorite scenes from Pacino and De Niro’s film repertoire and a customized movie poster wall of the actors’ film history.

Crowds of folks lined up at the corner of East 6th and Los Angeles in Downtown L.A. to get a sneak preview of the space and check out next door neighbors The Last Laugh (Estevan Oriol and Mister Cartoon’s storefronts) and streetwear apparel brand Upper Playground.

Attendees were treated to a catered taco station and hot dog stand, adult beverages, and music from DJ Skee. While some interesting names showed there face with the likes of Danny Trejo, Clifton Collins Jr., Jacob Vargas, DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill, Rohan Marley, and Latin hip-hop artist Malverde in attendance.

Come check out a tribute to De Niro and Pacino: The “Righteous Kill” space is open until September 15.
