LA-based artists, Geoff McFetridge opened his show US AS A LOGO exhibition last week at Copenhagen’s V1 Gallery. Having worked with poetry, animation, graphic design, and creating title sequences for movies, McFetridge’s talents stretch far beyond just a paint brush and canvas. For his first solo exhibition in Scandinavia, he resorts to utilizing his minimalistic tendencies with a series of works.
The “Art in the Streets” exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) that opened on Thursday has been the topic of a lot of conversation and here is a great project part of the installation. Combining art and fashion, renowned artist Geoff McFetridge worked together with skate icon Lance Mountain and California Skateparks, Nike SB to produce a skate-able art installation.

Befitting to the event, Nike SB and Geoff McFetridge compiled a quite unique Dunk High and a series of tees from renowned artists. A notable design, the Paper Dunk High designed by Geoff McFetridge, further showcases the artists unique approach. Limited to 24 unique pairs and displayed at MOCA’s retail shop, they will be auctioned on May 26, 2011 starting at $100.00 with all proceeds donated to the MOCA foundation. The artists to contribute to the series of tees include Neckface, Futura, CR Stecyk III and skateboarder Lance Mountain.

MOCA’s “Art in the Streets” exhibit will continue to run until August 8, 2011.

Geoff McFetridge is a Los Angeles based artist and filmmaker. A graduate of Cal Arts, he has worked primarily in the world of graphic design, creating graphics and logotypes for companies such as ESPN, Burton Snowboards, Nike, Girl Skateboards, Stussy and others. His first foray into galleries was a 1997 solo exhibition at George’s in Los Angeles. The show introduced his work to photographer and filmmaker Sofia Coppola who commissioned him to create the title graphics for her 1999 film, The Virgin Suicides. McFetridge has since mounted exhibitions of his work in New York, Berlin, London, Paris and Tokyo and was included in the 2003 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Triennial, New York. In addition to prints, his installations have included everything from furniture, film, fabrics and silkscreened wallpaper. Outside the art world, McFetridge’s designs have been featured on t-shirts, album covers, stickers, buttons, patches, and even athletic shoes.

Can you talk a bit about your core imagery? Bears are a strong theme in your work, along with a childlike quality. Are there any themes you are strongly attracted to?

I do end up adding bears here and there, not in any conscious way. I grew up around bears in Canada so bears represent some specific things to me. They are both cute and dangerous. When a bear attacks you it goes for your head, chewing at your kneck and skull. You are supposed to cover your head with your hands. Can you imagine getting your hands eaten by a bear as it tries to get to your head? Knowing this I still want to hug a bear when I see one. The childlike themes, yeah. Again, this is not a conscious thing. I think that the type of things I like to talk about in my work pushes me towards child-like imagery, or imagery that is quite friendly and unsophisticated. But that is the surface. What is important about what I do is that the images are separate from the ideas. The images are a tool of distraction, or bait, triggers. I am interested in imagery that is USEFUL, I want them so they can be transformed into ideas. So the imagery changes and develops over time but the ideas largely remain the same.

“This book is a small collection of some of the work I have done for Spike Jonze’s film adaptation of the book Where the Wild Things Are. I met Spike around 1998 and I have worked with him a lot over the years. This usually involved creating piles of work that amounted to a very small contribution to the project. This never bothered me, because it was an incredibly creative, fun and rewarding process that led up to the scrapping of my work”!

I noticed a difference when I began working on Where the Wild Things Are. For the first time I felt that Spike and I were working on a project where I could actually contribute in a significant way. Much less of what I was making was being thrown away, which was a first. I was given the opportunity to interpret not only Spike Jonze’s interpretation of Where the Wild Things Are, but also Maurice Sendak’s original book”.

Like any kid growing up in the 70’s I was greatly influenced by Mr. Sendak’s books. His books are not just on my bookshelf they are in my blood. What I did with the titles, type treatments and marketing graphics also owes greatly to the heavy creative lifting done by Sonny Gerasimowicz who designed the creatures in the film and the Art Direction of K.K. Barrett”.

Hanging their own work on the walls of HVW8 Art + Design Gallery for their new show Kevin, Michael & Geoff New Works on paper, the three friends and artists from Los Angeles get ready to open the show this Saturday evening. Erin Dyer from Juxtapoz Magazine went to see the three guys set up and get a sneak peak into the New Works exhibition. Colorful and cheeky the show is looking fantastic, then again, we wouldn’t expect anything less really would we? See below for images.
