Google have today revealed its latest high profile project, Google Currents. Similar to the mobile app Flipboard, Google Currents is an intuitive web content viewer, optimized for web content to be viewed on iOS and Android mobile devices. Already Google have partnered with the likes of The Huffington Post, TMZ, Gizmodo and Forbes – meaning from day one there’s an impressive list of content being fed through its window.

The highly anticipated Google Music Store is now live, marking the web giant’s first attempt at moving into the music network. The store has been designed to work hand-in-hand with their new cloud music solution, which was launched earlier in the year despite not having the backing of major record labels. Sony and Universal have both now signed up, therefore a total of 13 million songs are now available at your finger tips. The store is currently only available for users people in the US although you can be certain it will make a worldwide launch before to long, in the meantime those in the US check it out here.

The Mountain View, CA based company is set to launch their new product on September 19th known as Google Wallet. The premise of waving stuff around to pay for things isn’t a new one but the tech company hopes to popularize it. Basically, how it works is that you can store virtual credit cards on your phone and wherever you go if the merchant has the Google Wallet machine you can wave your phone at it. Currently, it will only work with Citi Mastercard or you can purchase a Google prepaid card but they are hoping to expand in the future. It is also only available right now for the Nexus S 4G mobile phone. Utilizing NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, it allows data transfer between two objects brought within a few inches of each other. You will also get customer loyalty discount offers and other things.

Seems like another way for Google to gather information on you.

If there is anyone capable of competing within the social network playing field with Facebook, its Google! Whether or not they can, whether or not that have the product, the timing, the know how, is yet to be decided, but what we do now know is thatG are giving it one big shot with Google+. Currently in ‘Invite Only’ beta, the site will gradually roll out with the pure purpose of competing with facebook – who know host a massive 500 million + users.

These are the key functions which google think will see it compete:

Circles - a functionality that allows individuals to place friends into groups, allowing users to share different forms of content with targeted clusters of friends

Hangouts - live multi-user video conferencing that permits friends to drop in and out of live group conversations

Huddle - group instant messaging

Sparks - a feature that connects individuals on the network to others with common interests.

Japan’s most celebrated contemporary artist, Takashi Murakami, has been commissioned by Google to decorate it’s iconic logo. The same prestige has been thrust upon the likes of Jackson Pollock and Norman Rockwell, and as you know the logo is frequently changed to celebrate special events, or days around the world. Murakami’s work was commissioned in order to celebrate summer solstice, June 21st. Entitled The First Day of Summer, the superflat movement founder has decided to enlist the help of his Kaikai and Kiki characters as well as his multicolored flowers.

Known for their search engine, Google is now taking a step into the hardware realm, with the new announcement of the Cr48 Chrome Notebook. The matte black notebook runs on an atom processor, has a 12-inch display, contains a full size keyboard, weigh around 3.8 pounds and roughly last 8 hours on a single battery charge. The software for the notebook is run solely on flash drives and is based on a cloud system, where users work and store all their information remotely. Google is currently running a Pilot Program for those who are interested in testing out the device. Users will be sent a notebook and in return they will provide Google with feedback.

Google and Arcade Fire today launched ‘The Wilderness Downtown”, a musical experience made specifically for the browser. The project capitalizes on advancements in web and browser technology to craft an experience that is deeply personalized for each viewer by playing out through the streets you grew up in. Set to Arcade Fire’s new single, the project uses HTML5, Google Maps, an integrated drawing tool, and multiple browser windows which move around the screen. Created by writer/director Chris Milk this makes for very welcoming news.

Thanks to psfk for the info.

May 22 marks the 30th anniversary of Namco’s famed arcade game Pac-Man and to pay homage Google have transformed their homepage logo with a fully playable version of the game, becoming the first fully interactive Google logo

Pac-Man was first released in Japan on May 22, 1980, Pac-Man is universally considered as one of the classics of the medium, virtually synonymous with video games, and an icon of the 1980s pop culture. Upon its release, the game and, subsequently, Pac-Man derivatives became a social phenomenon that sold a bevy of merchandise and also inspired, among other things, an animated television series and a top-ten hit single.
When Pac-Man was released, the most popular arcade video games were space shooters, in particular Space Invaders and Asteroids. The most visible minority were sports games that were mostly derivative of Pong. Pac-Man succeeded by creating a new genre and appealing to both genders. Pac-Man is often credited with being a landmark in video game history, and is among the most famous arcade games of all time. The character also appears in more than 30 officially licensed game spin-offs, as well as in numerous unauthorized clones and bootlegs. According to the Davie-Brown Index, Pac-Man has the highest brand awareness of any video game character among American consumers, recognized by 94 percent of them. Pac-Man is one of the longest running video game franchises from the golden age of video arcade games, and one of only three video games that are on display at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., (along with Pong and Dragon’s Lair).

Google has made a lot of things that has changed a lot of lives over the past few years. A few things being their search engine, Gmail/Google talk, Google Wave, and most recently is the Nexus One. This is HTC’s latest handset that will feature Google’s Mobile OS known as Android. The Nexus one looks great to me, a popular little feature is the animated backgrounds that you can interact with (see: video below). Since we are not a technology blog I won’t bother going into specs and details, but I will give my views on it as a gadget guy.

In my prior experiences with the Android OS it does its job and its easy to use, but it still seems clunky to me. I find the iPhone to be an overall more pleasant experience, yes I have one. Although, I do believe this is the nicest droid phone out. It’s thinner than the iPhone and looks to have the best screen for a smartphone. It has the trackball of the modern Blackberry’s and the curves of the phone make it look a lot like an elongated touchscreen Blackberry Curve to me. An extremely handsome looking smart phone! If anyone was looking into getting an Android phone, this is the one to get. It is being officially unveiled tomorrow at 10AM Pacific time.

You can imagine how massive LIFE magazine’s photo archive must be, and the task of putting these memorable images could only be hosted by one name Google. Dating back to the 1750’s and through to the present day the archive amasses close to 10 million images. Former TIME publisher Henry Luce’s collection is included as well which contains the entire works of Life photographers Alfred Eisenstaedt, Gjon Mili and Nina Leen, the Zapruder film of the Kennedy assassination; Dahlstrom glass plates of New York from the 1880’s; and Hugo Jaeger’s images of Nazi-era Germany. With hi-res images available for free and print versions can be purchased straight from Google this is some great news for historicans. Take a look here.
