Herbert Baglione is a Brazilian artist who uses a mix of traditional illustrational techniques and geometric elements that has his work exuding the affect of quiet and mesmerizing, sometimes even dark, drawings of naturally soft-natured subject matter.

His latest solo show ‘The Dark Wave’ opened last night at San Francisco’s FIFTY24SF gallery with a huge response from the guests, unfortunately the artist himself was not there to witness this response- he had some passport complications.

Consisting of an overwhelming selection of original sketches, close to 300 of which were taken out of his personal sketch book, and nine medium to large sized paintings, the show appeared colorful and insightful to the artists journey.

Have a look at ‘The Dark Wave’ show below.

“The Dark Wave” is a new solo exhibition by Herbert Baglione(TNO1). The Brazilian artist Herbert Baglione has been a strong influence in the South American graffiti movement for more than ten years. Inspired by Brazil’s street culture, Baglione started experimenting with new ways to look at his urban environment of Sao Paulo and provoked dialogue about his fresh perspective on urban artwork. Alongside these efforts are Baglione’s distinctive mural designs and stretched figures representing humans and aliens. These are often balancing elongated and rounded extremes with dramatic iconic symbols such as familiar urban architecture.

Influenced by his older brother, Baglione began painting at the age of three, and has found his greatest interest in provoking themes such as death, individualism, family, and chaos. These complex themes alongside his distinctive style have given Baglione deserved recognition in the international graffiti scene.

“The Dark Wave” features new sketches and paintings on canvas on display at FIFTY24SF Gallery from December 10, 2009 – January 28, 2010.

Contra o Verso is a perfect example of what the art scene is like in Brazil, a scene which is enjoying a peak and hard to argue with the likes of Herbert Baglione (THE NEW ORDER Issue 1) setting a strong tone.

“Contra o Verso (Against the Verse) ensembles a group of 8 prominent Brazilian street artists intimately connected to the urban art world. Transferring their artistic production into a gallery space, they establish a new challenge towards the contemporary art circuit, during the Sao Paulo Biennale. Nunca, Herbert Baglione, Tinho, Alex Hornest (Onesto) Flip, Flavio Samelo, Bruno9Li and Sesper have roots deep in the streets of Sao Paulo and other major cities around the globe through their respective graffiti, sticker art, skate practices, photography, and writings. Their subject matter goes from philosophical introspection to cultural anthropology.”

That is pretty. We have been doing some really good covers recently, but this one shows that if you make something specific for a cover, it looks mighty good. Sam, good one. Corey Arnold and I had a chat in this issue as well, which equates to goodness as well. Alaskan fishing is dangerous, by the way.

Also, just got back from London for Herbert Baglione’s opening at Lazarides Gallery. Thank you to all the fine folks at Lazarides… I remember something about going to Amy Winehouse’s pub, but a certain phone service that is connected w/apples was not cooperating. Photos to come.

The highly anticipated exhibit Two Broken Knees, a new series of work by Herbert Baglione, opens in London at Lazarides Gallery Greek Street this Friday, November 21st, 2008. If you’re not yet familiar with Baglione’s work, you should be. This Brazilian artist is an established contemporary painter who draws on strong simple mural designs, extreme physical figures, and human and alien icons, rendered in the style of cave drawings. His style has influenced the vibrant street art movement in South America for at least ten years. His position as one of Brazil’s most distinctive artists has also cemented his international acclaim in the design and art worlds.

Jaded with the scene and what he saw around him, Baglione started experimenting with new ways to look at the street, using the extremes of urban architecture to create his paintings, provoking a new dialogue. The effect is both visually and psychologically arresting in its intensity.

Although his figurative subjects are ever-present, his art is constantly growing and changing, relying on a strong palette. This new work has a strong minimalism set against an elaborate calligraphy and new injection of color. In Coins and Scratched Dice, emaciated figures fall down like match stick rain; in Spit, Blood and Mud, figures hang upside down from a base of stark geometric color.

In his new body of work comprising twenty paintings in small and large scale in acrylics, enamel and varnish, Baglione uses characters that seem to bloom and reclaim life. Textures from urban dirt and scratched out typography found in big global cities that he experimented with years ago and are now integrated with his recent work on geometric patterns, fractals, religion and erotica.

Two Broken Knees marks a new phase in which the painting process has become a religious ritual in a search of faith lost in the great urban centers of the world. He uses painting, drawing and installation as new instruments, continuing to touch on subjects, which he considers provoking such as death, individualism and chaos.

Herbert Baglione started painting in the Streets of São Paulo in the beginning of the 90s. Throughout the various phases in his work in his home country, Europe and the United States, Baglione has painted alongside important names of the international graffiti scene.

For Denmark’s Aarhus Festival, buildings and streets in the city of Aarhus were decorated with street art by ten Danish and international artists, including: André alias Monsieur A (FR), Blu (IT), Faust (DK), Herbert Baglione (BR), HuskMitNavn (DK), Miss.Tic (FR), Steve Powers (US), Søren Behncke alias papfar (DK), Victor Ash (FR/PT/DK) and Zevs (FR).

Brazil’s Herbert Baglione , with a recent book titled Vossia from Upper Playground’s FIFTY24SF Gallery, and collaborative shoe with adidas Originals and Upper Playground , has his work shown here. Looks like Herbert Baglione hit the entire city pretty hard, and from the looks of it, his work is getting better and better with each project. Stay tuned for Baglione’s solo show at Lazarides Gallery in London in November’s issue of Juxtapoz too.
