Saturday morning cartoons will always live in my memory. It’s a shame that nothing has come close to capturing that same animated magic from the 80s, but there is one thing that helps fill that void, and that is Gag Me With a Toon. The exhibition centered around popular cartoons of yore is back for the 3rd time and it opens at Los Angeles’ Melt Gallery this Friday. Curated by Steven Daily, the show will feature art work by Jeff McMillan, Travis Louie, Tomi Monstre, Alex Pardee, Buff Monster, Vyal Reyes and many more. If you’re in the area, be sure to stop by to relive some of that 80s fun.

Mountain Dew Green Label Art Series 3 at Magic Tradeshow

Just over a week ago, Mountain Dew had a special booth at the Magic Trade Show in Las Vegas to showcase their latest Green Label Art series featuring works from Jeff McMillan, Nathan Cabrera, Pushead, Claw Money, Stephen Bliss and Upso. In addition to the showcasing of the newest bottles, product that was also done in conjunction with the project was also on display. One of the highlights was a special autograph signing session from a couple of the artists from our Bailout art show: Jeff McMillan and Nathan Cabrera. Fans lined up to get each artist’s bottles signed and a special case was provided to help preserve and display the bottle properly.

Jeff McMillan is preparing to launch new works from his “Pepto Dismal” series focusing on the danger of how the faster foods brainwash more impressionable younger people and also what lurks in the mountainous landscapes behind them. Opening at Last Rites Gallery in New York this weekend it is certain to make a big impression.

Here is additional coverage from the compelling Celeritas exhibition which was the centre of attention over the weekend at SURU in LA. Featuring Alex Pardee, Barry McGee, Dr Romanelli, Estevan Oriol, Futura, Mike Shinoda, Stash as well as SLAMXHYPE blogger Mark Dean Veca and writer Jeff McMillan. Taking motorcycle equipment as the canvas for the art, all proceeds from the show have been donated towards Riders for Health.

Celeritas opens today at SURU on Melrose Avenue. The show, hosted by John Hensley and Joe Hahn, features work inspired by motorcycle racing culture. Artists include Barry McGee, Joe Hahn, Mike Shinoda, Mark Dean Veca, Audrey Kawasaki, Stash, Futura, James Jean, Jim Lee, Alex Pardee, Jeff McMillan, Troy Lee, Jesse James, Usugrow, Nathan Cabrera, Dr. Romanelli and Estevan Oriol.

Check out this awesome hand painted Barry McGee Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle, which will be up for auction. All proceeds go to Riders for Health non-profit organization.

SURU is located at 7662 Melrose Avenue. Show runs through August 16th.

This Sunday Suru will host Celeritas – A gallery exhibition and art auction featuring a collected body of work from a phenomenal group of artists who have come together to display their talent in an entirely new way – using motorcycle helmets, motorcycle leathers, and a Suzuki Hyabusa motorcycle as their medium to benefit Riders for Health. 100% of proceeds from the sale of the art benefits Riders for Health; An international non-profit organization.

Mike Tyson by Jeff McMillan

Jeff McMillan has just presented this painting he did of legendary pugilist, Mike Tyson. The painting was something McMillan did for Tyson’s official website and it can be seen on the main page. The painting does a great job of capturing Iron Mike in the ring with some great detailing on the satin shorts, the tape around the arms, down to the tattoos featured on the boxer’s body.

As part of our preview to “Bailout,” a group exhibition we have curated under the new ‘Solidified by SLAMXHYPE’ project we are profiling each artist involved. Bringing together a host of names to feature at this exciting milestone for all involved here at SLAMXHYPE with the exhibition opening first on December 6, then for a second time on December 11 at the Continental Gallery in Downtown LA. We have kicked off the profile’s with Jeff McMillan, a name renown in the LA area and will certainly add a unique dimension to the show, while we also give you a glimpse of one of Jeff’s works for the exhibition.

SLAMXHYPE – Please introduce yourself and what is your background?

JEFF MCMILLAN – My name is Jeff McMillan, I’m a freelance artist/painter/illustrator. I graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 2004 with a BFA in Illustration. I enjoy odd topics and figure I should paint them. I live and work in Long Beach, CA.

SXH – Can you tell us a bit about your artwork for the show?

JM – I did one piece on a fictional blue demon character that spits gold that lives up in the himalayas, he fancies a middle eastern boy scout uniform and hangs out with a dodo bird, he is the demon of want. I did two other pieces that comment on the identities of fast food chains.

SXH – How did you interperate and execute the title “Bailout”?

JM – I did one piece that comments on the act of being bailed out and what kind of strings are attached. The knight in shinning armour is a mysterious blue demon boy that spits out gold. He provides and we take, but there is always a price.

I did two other pieces that show the dark underbelly of the fast food chains, when people are pinching pennies they go for cheap food ex. “McDonalds” basically the monopolization of what to eat when times are tough.

SXH – What is your take on commercial art?

JM – Some of it is very cool, and some of it is very lame, it depends on what your purpose is. In the end, if your still doing it for the right reasons then it’s fine.

SXH – How do you plan to celebrate the holidays?

JM – Relaxing then stressing then relaxing, I’m not sure if it’s in that order.

Take a look at this interesting 3-way painting collaboration involving our own Jeff McMillan, Pete Wentz, and Travis McCoy. I do not know a whole lot about the actual painting, but as you can see, McMillan represented with his classic Yetti character. The abominable one is right up in the mix against the really pleasant mix of purples. Check the image after the jump.

Here is a really cool looking show at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles called, Cover Band. The show reaches out to over 50 artists as they were asked to use some of the greatest LP covers as their canvas. Some of the participating artists in this group show include: Alex Pardee, Jeff McMillan, Pete Wentz, Mark Brown, Kiersten Essenpreis, Israel Sanchez, and many more.
