Last December NIKE partnered with (RED) and made a commitment to fight HIV and Aids in Africa. Hundreds of thousands laced up to support the fight, on the pitch. In the run up to the summer of Football, NIKE took the message of Lace Up Save Lives into some of the most inspiring cities in the world. This is Tied Together. A story about action inspiring reaction. A 120 hours relay race in NYC, London, Milan, Berlin and Paris.

A genuine approach to creating awareness, and carrying through a philosophy which can be transposed into any situation. We spoke with Director Kai Regan, about the project and its unique approach.

SLAMXHYPE: Tell us about your knowledge of (RED) leading into Tied Together, and how has that changed?

Kai Regan: I knew (RED) was a charity but I really didn’t know exactly what it was. I saw the billboards and various collaborations but honestly didn’t really know what it was about. I now realize how it really WORKS. The money made from these product collaborations is donated to the programs that provide medicine and help fight HIV and AIDS in Africa.

After I saw the Lazarus Effect I truly saw things in a new light and absorbed the concept of how LACE UP. SAVE LIVES actually works. The goal for Tied Together film is to show people how by participating on any level your actually helping people in need. I think thats really important for the audience and people in general to comprehend how this program works and how to get involved.

SLAMXHYPE: What was unique about Tied Together, (RED) do a lot of projects to create awareness for their great cause, what makes Tied Together stand out?

Kai Regan: Tied Together was using a grassroots approach to awareness and participation. We thought about the fact that a billboard in Times Square doesn’t really DO anything these days. People listen to people close to them and through word of mouth not through billboards. We wanted to create a movement of people who do things in their lives and know how to talk about it.

We reached out to creatives, musicians, actors, artists, and athletes to go about charity with a action based spirit to inspire the audience and communities in each of the 5 cities to get involved. The concept was to create real time awareness with the relay online for 120 hours straight in 5 cities with creatives around the world while the relay was happening. www.tiedtogether2010.com

We then made a film about the curated participants who do things differently in life and applied that to charity and really show the world how you can do something simple fun and creative and it matters.

SLAMXHYPE: Not only did you direct the film, but you ran the relay too, what was the general vibe and feeling you had while running and being a part of it?

Kai Regan: I believe in doing. I believe that in order to really direct a film about the project and have a clear perspective you have to be a part of it, that goes from buying the laces and running the route like everyone else. Simple actions that help create a reaction and hopefully that understanding is in the film it was supposed to show you first hand what it did and why we did it.

SLAMXHYPE: What made Tied Together work so well, for some reason, there was no drop in energy, even though the project travelled the globe?

Kai Regan: Its worked because people made it theirs. It was personal, and people did different things around the world with the same idea, but it kept on growing and changing it was awesome to watch.

It truly was people acting and reacting and it kept on going…

SLAMXHYPE: As a Director, what was your general idea behind the film? and how you wanted it to come through?

Kai Regan: I want people to be inspired. I want to people to realize that if you work together you can really change things.

Please support (RED) and the LACE UP. SAVE LIVES initiative, buy the laces here.

“Straight Shooter” A COACD 2010 Malendar, is just that, a calender, rather than featuring firefighters or naked women, features some of NYC’s best male photographers. So… we’re not gay and most of us aren’t women here in the SLAMXHYPE Offices, but if you are then this I’m sure is what you need on your wall, hey, maybe you’re just a fan of photographers? Curated by Douglas Perrett and designed by Creative Director David Covell, while the calender was shot by photographer Kathy Lo.
SLAMXHYPE – What is the story behind RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT? How did you conceive it?

Kai Regan – The story is I got arrested in the Rivington Hotel throwing bottles out of the window from the 13th floor cause I was mad as fuck at myself. Let’s just say there were drugs and strippers involved, and this was about 11 am btw on a Sunday. I went to booking for about 64 hours and was charged with reckless endangerment plus a few other felonies sprinkled on top. I got off with time served and about 20 g’s in lawyer fees. GOD BLESS AMERICA. The theme of the show is based on those experiences and things to come understanding my frustrations and putting them to work for you vs. locking you down….something along those lines. I am thinking about doing a film about this story so I kept it vague.

SXH - Does this exhibition mark a new direction for your work?

KR – Yes, even though we have worked on many things throughout the years with them, this is the first full scale project for sure….not the last, that’s for damn sure…

SXH - You are a filmmaker too – having worked on videos and shorts for The Virgins, CocoRosie and Nike. How does the filmmaking process differ from photography for you?

Photo is what’s on the page, will always be on the page, sitting there for you to critique and judge and love it or hate it or not give a fuck about it. Different swords to fall on…

Back when Alife was formed, it was orginally done so as an art collective. June will see a new direction from the New York founded brand with the opening of their new Gallery space entitled Alife Presents, located on Rivington St opposite the Alife NYC location.

The first show will be June 11th in NYC and will feature Photographer and filmmaker Kai Regan. Check out the details in the flyer and stay tuned for coverage from the event.

ALIFE is pleased to announce RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT, an exhibition by photographer/filmmaker Kai Regan. The show is a solo installation around rebellion and the belief that one should never settle or be scared to express their frustrations and anger with the status quo. The exhibit includes all new photographs and sculptures. The work is displayed in a site-specific environment created for the occasion with the help of New York graffiti writer EARSNOT of the IRAK crew.

Under our law, “reckless endangerment” is a crime consisting of acts that create a substantial risk of serious physical injury to another person. The accused person isn’t required to intend the resulting or potential harm, but must have acted in a way that showed a disregard for the foreseeable consequences of the actions.

The show is a dialogue between destruction and creation. With it, Regan shows that by way of destruction, one creates change, stimulation, and ultimately evolution.

Artist Statement: “Behind the various sides of destruction lies intent and therefore this show also examines that concept together with cause and effect. Depending on intent a political riot can provoke change, but it can just as easily destroy the cause it stood for. This show examines your intent, the line you walk, or destroy, coupled with an understanding of the balance of both destruction and creation.”

The exhibition will be accompanied by a large-format catalog of Regan’s featured photographs and others not on display, as well as a small T-shirt collection representing the Reckless Endangerment theme.

Regan’s exhibition marks the grand opening of the ALIFE PRESENTS space and ALIFE’s return to the production of ALIFE art exhibits which, over the years, have included some of this generation’s most notable pop and contemporary young artists.

The opening reception will take place on June 11th from 7 to 8pm, and a private reception for the artist will be held that same night. Both events are in association with, and hosted by, Index Magazine and Belvedere Vodka.
