Mirror/Dash is a group formed of Sonic Youth members (and husband and wife) Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore.  An exploration in sound, it’s a freeform noise project inspired by avant garde composers, free jazz and punk rock in which both musicians torture their instruments with effects, by throwing them about or hitting them with drumsticks, screwdrivers, or whatever else comes to hand to create a trance like drone of sound.  Opening Ceremony attended a recent gig by the band at the Thirty Days Gallery in NYC and recorded the spectacle for us all too see.

One of the original band members of musical group Sonic Youth, it is as a front line guitarist and vocalist that Kim Gordon is more widely celebrated in cultural circles. However, this show of works by Kim Gordon is what could be the turning point for her pigeon-holed status. Entitled ‘The Noise Paintings’, Kim Gorodn’s paintings are now on display at John McWhinnie Gallery until May 8th 2010. Energetically executed and hand written text in black and blue paint hold the punk attitude and lifestyle that is still very apparent in Kim Gordon. See a preview of The Noise Paintings below.

As “Performing/Guzzling”, the new monograph from Kim Gordon, bassist with art rock superstars Sonic Youth, shows she is also a highly acclaimed artist.

The monograph features a series of abstract, mixed media watercolour portraits of the dreamlike faces she can see from the stage.  Highly limited to 3,000 copies the book comes with a signed print and has been put together by Gordon herself and also features other works from her plus lyrics and essays from writers Jutta Koether and Hilton Als.

Published this April by Nieves and Rizzoli, Performing/Guzzling handsomely translates Gordon’s output in book form. Look for it in April.

The recent Rodarte exhibition at Colette in Paris featured a series of canvases painted by Kim Gordan of Sonic Youth. Now these dripping brush painted graffiti style slogans, which are similar to the cover of recent Sonic Youth record “Sacred Trickster”, are now available to purchase through Colette.

Robert Berman gallery gallery website in Santa Monica had a great opening last night.   The group show was totally rock and roll featuring the work of Raymond Pettibone, Ron English, Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Gibby Haynes  and more.   Curated by Jon Cournoyer.    Shepaird Fairey was on the wheels of steel.   It was a beautiful night out- combine that with great art, a fun crowd, great wine (De Loach Vineyards and Barndiva) and good conversation and it’s a winner.

Robert Berman Gallery is pleased to present the group exhibition Rock, Paper, Scissor on view February 28 – March 21, 2009. The show will feature noteworthy artists who freely use, base imagery on, thrive, and excel in both the mediums of visual art and music. The artists taking part in the show are Raymond Pettibon, Daniel Johnston, Ron English, Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers and Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth.
This exhibition highlights these artists who in both the mediums of music and art have created a memorable and historical body of work and continue to do so. Born from outsider roots stemming from Los Angeles, New York and Texas, they blurred the boundaries of aural and visual expressions creating what would become a hallmark of material from the period of the 1980’s-1990’s, eventually being absorbed by both the mainstream public and art industries. It’s influences today are countless.

On exhibit will be paintings, drawings, collages, conceptual pieces and installations as well as ephemera including lyric sheets by Raymond Pettibon that have rarely been exhibited. Also a large collection or rare and early Daniel Johnston works, many of which have never been publicly exhibited, will also be on view from the collection of Don Goede, co-author along with Tarssa Yazdan of the definitive book on the artist “Hi, How Are You?”. These works will be published in the next edition of this book as well.
A catalogue will be available for purchase.   Hole’s Eric Erlandson, Director Mike Piscetelli, actor PJ Ransom, Jaime McPhee and Nova (the littlest art critic) were all in attendance.
