Cycling’s renaissance man Lance Armstrong has created this very sleek and minimal design of the Trek District frame. A one off design which has been given the title Lance District features the carbon fibre District frame that is set-up with a carbon fiber composite yellow belt drive system that completes the look well accustomed to Lance Armstrong.

Here it is, the opening of the highly anticipated STAGES exhibition at O.H.W.O.W. in Miami for Art Basel. For what is serving as the final leg for the installation the renowned gallery has worked in well with Nike and LIVESTRONG to create the desired effect and more. New names are on hand with this exhibition, including the likes of Os Gemeos and Erik Parker contributing and making this a must see before the doors close on December 6.

We’ve updated our STAGES mini-site with an interview with not only Kenny Scharf (THE NEW ORDER Issue 3), but KAWS (THE NEW ORDER Issue 2) too. The Stages team turned up to Kenny Scharf’s studio to find KAWS was paying a visit too, a meeting of two era’s of Pop Art leaders. Both Artists have been involved with STAGES since its inception, showing huge support in raising awareness and funds for The Lance Armstrong Foundation.

When we consider the link between Cancer and Art, and the underlying thought process of how STAGES can touch so many, it’s based strongly around the premise that Cancer can affect anyone, so too can Art, anyone from any place, any background, any race can be affected and touched by either. Pop Art is the one genre of Art that given its purposeful relevance to Popular Culture can reach people easier than almost any other genre of art. It’s fitting that these two amazing artists are apart of STAGES, who’s purpose is not just to raise funds, but raise awareness of the fight against Cancer.

KAWS, throughout his steep climb to become one of the most famous artists in the world today, has often been compared to the likes of Haring, Warhol and Scharf, to see the New Jersey born artist together alongside his fellow Brooklyn based Scharf is uncanny, the similarities are too, Scharf so heavily and known for his influences from the likes of The Jetson’s and Flintstones, KAWS, likewise, so well known for his reference to The Simpson’s, The Smurf’s and Sponge Bob Squarepants.

With a strong debut in Paris, STAGES launched at Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery with a team of the world’s most accomplished and promising international artists, including Ed Ruscha, Cai-Guo Qiang, Richard Prince, Catherine Opie, KAWS, Eric White, José Parlá, Christopher Wool, Tom Sachs, Dzine, and Rosson Crow. The second part of their journey took place in New York City hosted by Deitch Projects where the team picked up four extra members with new works: the Os Gemeos twins, Futura and Dustin Yellin.

The finale will take place at one of the art world’s biggest global events: Art Basel Miami Beach. To create an even louder voice for the LIVESTRONG message, STAGES calls in Los Angeles based Christian and Rob Clayton, aka the Clayton Brothers, the furious paintings from Erik Parker and the black and white portraiture genius of artist Tomoo Gokita for a high energy show full of talent and spirit. All artwork on display as part of STAGES will be available for purchase with proceeds directly benefiting LIVESTRONG.

Tom Sachs has been a big supporter of Nike and LIVESTRONG’s STAGES, since it launched in Paris earlier this year, not only creating one of the most talked about pieces of the show, but being on hand at the exhibitions and generally throwing alot of support towards the project. For the iconic artist, this project is close to his heart, not only a close friend of Lance Armstrong’s but also an avid bike rider himself. Nike and LIVESTRONG’s WNW space, will, this Friday, play host to a discussion and demonstration by Sachs looking at Bike Theft, a problem most cyclists experience at some point. The chance to see one of the icons of our time speak is something that can’t be missed.

As far as I can tell from a scan out of a magazine, this is my favourite Air Force 1 in sometime, not sure whether its that aesthetically its well done, or its my great belief in this cause, either way, with the funds going to LIVESTRONG, its a must get. Nike Sportswear LIVESTRONG Collection has made a welcome addition with the Air Zoom Tiempo TZ LAF Texas Austin that will release on October 24 in the US. Nike’s design team worked with Lance Armstrong to create a Zoom Tiempo inspired by Lance’s hometown, Austin Texas. The Air Zoom Tiempo TZ draws inspiration directly from the cyclists of Austin and one of the city’s most iconic cycling stores Mellow Johnny’s.

The shoe also draws inspiration from the art bikes created to help raise funds and awareness for the Lance Armstrong Foundation this summer. Finally, it takes the iconic LIVESTRONG yellow and integrates it throughout the design of the shoe.

Juxtaposing soft premium oiled leather with aggressive anti-abrasive materials and black contrast stitching. The design is inspired by the two sides of Lance: The world’s greatest road cyclist and a man deeply connected with the culture of his sport. “Texas” and “Austin” are boldly placed on the shoe heels. The stitches crossed on the words give an unfinished and rough touch. Contrasting yellow and black sockliners build on the LIVESTRONG and Mellow Johnny’s bike shop theme.

The crafted Starks laces with black aglets (tips) complement the refined, but aggressive, design.
The Air Zoom Tiempo Austin Texas will be available at select Nike Sportswear retailers (Mellow Johnny’s and 21 Mercer) on October 24th, 2009. Its re-introduction in the global market, together along with the other three shoes collaborated with cyclists from Paris, Berlin and San Francisco is scheduled in early November.

Following the success of the STAGES exhibition at the highly coveted Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin during Tour De France, the exhibition will make a welcome move into US soil. Deitch Projects will be the hosts of this quite remarkable host of names and it will certainly be another event to remember as Nike and Livestrong, along with the artists come together for a great cause. With the release of the Nike Sportswear 4 Air Zoom Tiempos earlier this year, along with the announcement of their “Stages” project, with quite a limited quantity.  Here we see a re-launch of the 4 Air Zoom Tiempos which has a broader distribution globally. The whole Air Zoom Tiempo pack includes eight different color ways inspired by the iconic yellow of LIVESTRONG.

Each color represents a different rider and their respective city. the eight riders include; Kyle Demers from NYC, Jupiter Desphy from LA, Superted from London, Takaharu Okada from Tokyo, Yorgo Tloupas representing Paris, Berlin’s Henrik Kuerschner, Massan from San Francisco and Lance Armstrong representing his home town of Austin.

Another highly anticipated release is that of the Nike Sportswear Livestrong M65 jacket. Finally, it is going to be on the market! 

A true classic of military-inspired design, the Nike M65 is remastered with Nike innovation and design. Updated and re-crafted as part of the NSW collection, it is produced from a highly functional three layer laminate water resistant breathable nylon.  Rebuilt for the Nike Sportswear LIVESTRONG Collection, the jacket stays true to its classic M65 detailing including a sublimated internal grid print, rain gutter storm flap, waterproof front zip, a 2.5 layer packable hood, and Velcro adjustable cuffs. Inspired by the iconic yellow, this jacket is constructed using ultrasonic welding/taped back construction and very minimal stitching.

The Air Zoom Tiempo pack and M65 Jacket will be available at select Nike Sportswear retailers on October 2nd.
