Here is another great interpretation of the iconic 1955 Levi’s 501 model through the Levi’s Vintage Clothing initiative. Renowned for the “anti-fit” which combines the classic aesthetic although slightly more boxier for added comfort. These two washes, the “Fallen Down” and “Faded Memory” are highlighted by the use of the signature traits likes the big “E” red tab, zinc button fly and backpockets with covered rivets. Having seen a number of great products come to fruition from Levi’s and the Comme des Garcons Junya Watanabe MAN line this latest model is no exception. The 1966 JWXX Customized Denim is highlighted by a design that reflects the gardner influence on the entire collection with a combination of panelling providing a strong aesthetic.

Fashion brands were perhaps a little late when it came to social media, but now that they’ve caught on collectively they’ve been very innovative. Levi’s are the latest to push the envelope by launching a global campaign to find the new face of their upcoming campaign via Instragram. Users are to upload photos of themselves, or friends, and to tag the photo with #iamlevis.

The combination of Japanese designers Takahiro Miyashita and Kazuki Kuraishi continues to flourish with the traditional core of Levi’s making for a great juxtaposition. The Levi’s Left handed Jean by Takahrio Kuraishi is defined by a more innovative approach with the vision and contemporary approach from the two well defined. This Round Neck Trucker Jacket makes for a nice reinterpretation of the classic design, with a cropped clean finish defined by the detailing like the contrasting stitching and good use of zips.

Entitled “Blue Sundries” the outcome is defined again by the combination of the Levi’s traditional denim and the more casual, street approach of Stussy. Supreme’s history of collaborations falls on a spectrum no other brands could match, updating their catalogue with a small capsule collection with world renowned denim company, Levi’s. The collection is comprised of a Supreme rendition of the classic Levi’s 505 zip-fly jean, a chambray work shirt, a trucker jacket in leather and suede, a denim down vest, and a denim bell hat, all produced in the U.S.A. The collection will see an in-stores as well as online release September 15th, will be available in Japan on September 17th, and will be available in London September 22nd.

In the aftermath of the riots that took place in London and other parts of England, there was bound to be a reaction, and one of great measures. Here is a great article on PRWeek highlighting some brands that effect our culture reactions, with Levi’s taking full advantage and using imagery from the riots to launch a new line.

Brands including Levi’s and Nike denied suggestions that they were paying the price of flirting with images of youthful rebellion, but several youth brands are attempting to reconnect their offerings with sportspeople and even with the people who cleaned up after the protests.

In a Daily Mail column on Monday, Janet Street-Porter wrote that ‘even mainstream brands such as Levi’s promote the notion of confrontation as hip’.

Writing for PRWeek, Instinct PR founder Jonathan Kirkby has argued that brands must now become ‘more sensitive’ with their PR and marketing, warning against using imagery and ideas that could be interpreted as ‘encouraging a rebellious attitude’.

Levi’s pulled cinema and Facebook adverts last week for its Go Forth range, which featured a young man squaring up to riot police while a voiceover said ‘you’re marvellous’.

Although Levi’s declined to discuss how it was moving its brand on following the riots, a statement given to PRWeek claimed that the advert was ‘in the spirit of positive action and optimism’.

It added: ‘We believe this spirit was encapsulated by the groups that came together in Clapham, Hackney and elsewhere to rebuild their communities.’

A Nike spokesman denied that the brand had flirted with dangerous imagery, although earlier this year it replaced a line of shirts that read ‘Dope’, ‘Get High’ and ‘Ride Pipe’ following complaints that they promoted drug use.

Hinting that Nike was likely to refocus its comms and marketing strategy to emphasise its relationship with elite sportspeople, the spokesman insisted ’sports values have always inspired our campaigns and brand statements’.

London 2012 Olympics tier one sponsor Adidas has used controversial rappers Snoop Dogg and Big Sean to promote the brand. Adidas head of PR Sarah Gower declined to comment, but a previous statement said the riots ‘go against everything we stand for’.

PRWeek also contacted JD Sports group marketing director Stephen White for comment, but he failed to respond.

Foot Locker declined to comment as ‘a matter of corporate policy’.

We’ve stayed away from the topic of the London Riots over the last week, its not really our place to be, we talk about clothes and art, we’ll leave that to the big boys. But one interesting tidbit is that Levi’s have pulled its ‘Go Forth’ ad campaign from the UK as the spot depicts Riot Scenes. It’s a great campaign, with some unfortunate timing.

This is a very small piece of news in amongst a much bigger issue, we wish all those affected in the UK our best wishes, and hope for peace.
