One of the UK’s most forward thinking record labels and stores, Soul Jazz have just release this amazing collection of album sleeves of the deepest and weirdest jazz music ever, compiled by legendary DJs and record label founders Gilles Peterson (Acid Jazz, Talkin Loud, Brownswood) and Stuart Baker (Soul Jazz Records).

A unique collection of cover artwork from jazz albums between 1965-83, a time when avant garde jazz moved closer to the mainstrain thanks to appropriation by artists like Miles Davis and Weather Report. Influenced by the revolutionary politics of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and the civil rights movement and the freedom of hippy culture of the 1960s young jazz musicians were given the self-determination and economic power to follow their own cosmic musical paths. Artists like Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, the Art Ensemble of Chicago and others ‘took control’ of their own work by recording, releasing and distributing their own music themselves.

The record sleeves of this era are as iconic and historically unique as the music itself and a striking reflection of the time. In a time before desktop publishing and without the influence of record company marketing men these hard to find private press records (sometimes as low as 500 copies) featured bizarre and psychedelic self-made sleeves which are as radical as the music flowing from the discs they housed. Its a movement that preceded the D-I-Y cultural revolution of punk, and is just as influential on both the aesthetic and ethos of street culture.

‘Freedom, Rhythm and Sound’ is the first ever collection of this fascinating goldmine of album art, which represents the first wave of inspired independent production within popular music.

Available now from Sounds Of The Universe.

November 10th will see the release of Miles Davis, and probably music’s, biggest box set yet. Made up of 70 CD’s and 1 DVD, the box set will be available exclusively through Amazon.

“The DVD is Live in Europe ‘67, which will be on DVD for the first time ever with this set. The set will also include a previously unreleased live recording of Davis’s performance at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival.

According to Legacy, the CDs will all come in “Japanese-styled mini LP jackets”, which sounds cool. The CDs will include bonus tracks that have been tacked on to Davis reissues over the years. There will also be a 250-page book.”

The impressive set will set you back $369.98, but thats only $5 a disc!

About a week back, we made a brief mention about an upcoming release of some Supreme tees featuring album cover art work from Miles Davis’ On The Corner album, but now, Supreme has officially released some information regarding these tees, but with some amazing added news. In addition to the release of the aforementioned tees, more tees have been announced and previewed, but it does not stop there. Sony Music will also be getting involved by re-releasing 3 of Miles Davis’ most influential and important albums on CD with Supreme adding their touch by packaging the digitally remastered CDs with a custom sticker for each title. Have a look inside for more information and images. The following is an excerpt from Supreme’s statement regardint the release:

“In light of the 50th anniversary of the release of ‘Kind of Blue’ which is regarded by many as one of the greatest records of all time, Supreme along with the Miles Davis Foundation, and Sony Music will re-release a Limited Edition series of three of Miles’ most influential records, marking three distinct moments in his musical evolution – Kind of Blue originally released in 1959, Nefertiti originally released in 1968, and On The Corner originally released in 1972. Each CD cover is a unique, exact replica of the original 12″ Album Cover. Each has been digitally remastered for superior sound, and includes bonus tracks as well as a custom sticker for each title. Along with these CDs Supreme will be releasing a group of Tees, one
corresponding to each of the three albums.”
