Vans OTW and Mr. Cartoon proudly present the Art of Lettering, a limited edition book featuring Cartoon’s personal photography, published by Eric Elms/And Press. The first in a series of forthcoming projects from Vans OTW advocates including Cartoon, Elms, Dimitri Coste and The Blackouts, the book was created in conjunction with Mr. Cartoons “Art of Lettering” seminar held in Los Angeles this summer. The seminar featured Cartoon discussing how lettering has impacted his life – from graffiti art to vintage sign painting and modern day low rider script as well as illustration airbrushing and his concepts of tattooing. The limited run of 818 books are available at select OTW retailers worldwide.

NOTE: Please accept/embrace the aesthetic of the iPhone 4, 5-megapixel camera shots. Some images were even captured with the 30 FPS front camera. I am finally embracing the flexibility and forced restraints of a camera phone. Difficult, as image quality has always been a priority. However, movement, flexibility & creativity currently trump technology, which in turn mitigates friction currently.
We need less friction.

The video gives a more intimate look into the man behind the tattoos, talking about his experiences in Japan, dealing with the taboos that are generally associated with the Yakuza and the differences in tattoo culture. St. Alfred x Nike Sportswear Six Points Soccer Ball Auction

The three month initiative of the St. Alfred x Nike Sportswear Six Points space in Chicago is about to celebrate their final soccer event. The space that has already housed several art and football-related events is playing host to a private auction that will take place on July 17th offering artistically made soccer balls created by Mr. Cartoon, DZine and Cody Hudson All proceeds going to the Urban Initiatives program, a local Chicago-based effort for helping youth succeed in society through the help of soccer.

Having already showcased the Rejuven8 Mid as part of this collaboration tattoo artist Mr Cartoon has designed for Nike Sportwear, we can follow it up with the Air Zoom Tiempo & Air Footscape Motion. As part of the Nike Sportswear Six Collaborations with a “State of the Art” Twist, Mr Cartoon has used black and white as his pallet of colors for his USA collection. With the Air Zoom Tiempo a direct influence from soccer while the Air Footscape Motion reflects the innovative side of Nike.

Having worked with Nike Sportswear on countless occasions, renowned artist Mr Cartoon has worked on his own version of the highly coveted Rejuven8 Mid. The simple and clean design puts a monotone black upper on a white sole with the addition Mr. Cartoon’s interpretation of the Nike logo on the tongue.

Nike Sportswear x Brooks Livestrong Saddle by Mr Cartoon

Nike Sportswear continue to celebrate Lance Armstrongs return to the saddle with the charitable Livestrong project. This latest piece has included the expert craftsmanship of Brooks, who have crafted a custom bike seat that matches the work of Mr Cartoon for the Stages collection. Featuring the artists iconic “LA” logo this is certain to get as much attention as the sold out Air Force 1. Be certain to hear more from the likes of Futura and Busy P as we anticipate similar pieces of work.

Righteous Kill Exhibition Opens

On Wednesday night SA Studios hosted a VIP tribute event honoring film legends Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in anticipation of their upcoming film together called “Righteous Kill.” Tattooist Mister Cartoon and photographer/director Estevan Oriol designed the film’s poster. The space is filled with Pacino and De Niro’s most iconic film memorabilia, including plasma screens throughout the place showcasing Oriol and Cartoon’s favorite scenes from Pacino and De Niro’s film repertoire and a customized movie poster wall of the actors’ film history.

Crowds of folks lined up at the corner of East 6th and Los Angeles in Downtown L.A. to get a sneak preview of the space and check out next door neighbors The Last Laugh (Estevan Oriol and Mister Cartoon’s storefronts) and streetwear apparel brand Upper Playground.

Attendees were treated to a catered taco station and hot dog stand, adult beverages, and music from DJ Skee. While some interesting names showed there face with the likes of Danny Trejo, Clifton Collins Jr., Jacob Vargas, DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill, Rohan Marley, and Latin hip-hop artist Malverde in attendance.
