Self taught Takahiro Miyashita established the brand Number (N)ine in Tokyo (November)1996, taking his influences from street culture and music.
Bold red and black checks, bondage trousers and large hoodies quickly became classic signatures for his cult label. Which have developed into key looks over the past seasons namely rock’n’roll black and white checks and grungy knit layers juxtaposed against a militarism presence in the overall details and often including officers coats.
Miyashita clearly likes to draw deeply on his inspirations rooted in his love for Rock’n’Roll outlaws, which he directly injects into his collections as in S/S 2007 and F/W 2007 with aspects of the show carrying elements of his continuing affection with Kurt Cobain and Johnny Cash, with the notable repetitive use of plaid akin to the Seattle grunge scene that Nirvana was centralised within, but worked to the overall effect of Cowboy Chic carried along by Johnny Cash’s ominous voice on the soundtrack to the collections.
His obsession for Johnny Cash, the man in black is notably becoming a popular theme which Miyashita has played to the hilt including his new collection for S/S 08. Where he has once again played off the recurring subtext of militarism with cropped three piece worn out layered suits with Napoleonic detailing paired with soldiers caps and a layered shoe/boot hybrid and pushing with it the message black is the new and in more ways intense black.
Representative director of the label issued the following statement on the 20th of February 2009 to announce the closing of the label.
Dear friends and supporters,
Firstly, thank you for taking the time to read this.
“When you’re finished changing, you’re finished.”
NUMBER (N)INE the fashion brand started 12 years ago in a back alley in Tokyo. Over the last decade, NUMBER (N)INE evolved, always forging ahead with a unique and potent vision, to emerge as the leading brand of Japan. It was this same progressive philosophy – of ever moving forward – that prompted NUMBER (N)INE to go from the Tokyo to the Paris collections.
And now, at the height of its success, NUMBER (N)INE is taking its final bow: On February 20, 2009, NUMBER (N)INE will begin to disband. Designer Takahiro Miyashita will secede from the group, and the brand as we know it will come to an end. On January 22, NUMBER (N)INE performed its last show, “A Closed Feeling,” the Autumn/Winter 2009 collection, which will be produced for all its longtime fans, from innovators to collectors. Though this is the closing act, we hope that the tracks of NUMBER (N)INE will continue to resonate in the minds and memories of all. All NUMBER (N)INE shops will remain open with the fall winter collection until the end of the year.
We don’t know yet what the future will hold, but keep looking and Takahiro Miyashita will surely appear somewhere.
Thank you to all for your support and patronage.
