The Robert Geller Fall/Winter 2012 Collection is defined by inspiration from English Punk, more specifically from listening to early eighties post-punk band The Sound. Combining slim and oversized silhouettes and a casual approach to tailoring this makes for another bold statement from the NYC based designer. Key elemenst see greys, olives and charcoals making much of the pallet of colors while accented by yellow and orange while notable fabrics include sweat, waxed cottons and cable knitwear, all in all making for a sophisticated installation.

Robert Geller Spring/Summer collection garnered much praise after its runway introduction back in September, and we are finally starting to see its global release. The collection holistically represents a very strong direction for Geller and with its rich hues and beautifully constructed garments I can see why it received such strong reviews. The standout piece for me would have to be the zippered trench coat as its take on a classic pushes the trench coat years ahead of where it has been. Short notched lapels and an embellished body show that a trench coat cleans up well when done properly even though I wonder if this now becomes a “Mac” coat or chesterfield. Call it what you want the piece is perfection. Blackbird is one of a few retailers who have taken stock in the piece.

For Spring, Robert Geller collaborated with New York designer Alyssa Norton on a rendition of her signature jewelry pieces to compliment his show. The necklaces are constructed from brass, which Alyssa then intricately weaves shades of silk threads through and around the links to create a beautiful juxtaposition of materials.

Always Never NYC have two variations of the collaboration available, a thin necklace in a deep brown combo as well as the brass/red, both of which can also double as a bracelet for $179, and the larger, layered pieces in black/black and brass/red for $295.

Vancouver based retailer Roden Gray have relocated to a larger space making for welcoming news for fans of labels like Wings + Horns, Gitman Vintage, Robert Geller, nonnative, Sophnet, Uniform Experiment, Band of Outsiders, Comme des Garcons, Common Projects, and Porter. The outcome of four months of work, the 3000 sq ft represents the impact the store has had on the area and the culture in general. The minimal design concept is kept clean and impresses with the combination of exposed structural concrete and stainless steel fixtures while the locally made furniture was sourced from Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir with the original Maple floors, a real stand out.

Robert Geller presented his Spring/Summer 2011 collection last night at Exit Art in New York. Inspired by the youth of the 1960s and 70s- an era in which young people around the world were awakened to the power they possessed to enact change. Of particular interest was the Berlin student movement who challenged the German government.

The collection consisted of khaki greens and reds, some obvious military references paired with a tailored and modern take on menswear. The styling was great by Yuji Takenaka.

Peter: Robert Geller has the uncanny ability to throw a wrench into my life plans, After all, it was his last collection at the height of Cloak in Fall 2004 that made me leave my Fine Arts Major in San Francisco and hop on a plane to study fashion in New York. And when I found out he had started a namesake label in 2007, I left my senior year at Parsons and began working with him.

Seven seasons later we’ve upgraded from a tiny freezer of an office into the back of his wife Ana Lerario-Geller’s showroom, collected a GQ/CFDA Award for Best New Menswear Designer, collaborated with shoebrand Common Projects, and a little company called Levi’s.
We took some time off from designing Spring 2011 to chat about the design process, why a new generation of American men are embracing fashion thanks to the digital age, and grab a few Vietnamese sandwich along the way.”

Peter: Take us through a day of designing.

Robert: Designing a collection part for me is kind of special because we usually design a collection in a very short time and it’s quite a big.  Once we get into it I usually wake up very early. I wake up at 5 o’clock and get to the office at 6.  And from 6 to 10 I have the office to myself, which is a very nice thinking time for me.  I can’t design when there’s a lot of people around, it’s real distracting.  What I’ve done for every season is pick a book on tape and I listen to that while I do rough sketches. It’s something that’s going on that I can look forward to [finishing the book]. It helps me get up in the morning. The two don’t necessarily have any correlation,  if I’m doing a collection on Vienna I’m not listening to Death in Venice.

Peter: Sort of like background noise

Robert: It’s just something, yeah. It makes me feel less lonely.
At around 10 o’clock my assistants come in and we start doing more of the technical drawings together.  From the rough sketches we all sit around the communal table in our office, chat and sketch together, which is really nice.
For lunch we either order in and all eat at the table together. Or when it’s nice out we like to go to this sandwich place in Tribeca called Columbine. We buy sandwiches there, go sit in the street in the sun and relax for a bit.

Then we go back and if there’s nothing too crazy going on we’ll continue sketching. But there’s always daily things to take care of, we usually do that in the afternoon. That’s a typical day when we’re sketching.

Closer to the show, it’s more about preparing for the show.  They’ll be tons of people here. There’s a stylist. The Stylists’ assistants. The Graphic Designer will be here working with us on things like invites for the show. It’s kind of a mad house.
