Newspeak: British Art Now Part 1 Exhibition

Opening this week at the Saatchi Gallery in London is the “Newspeak: British Art Now Part 1″ exhibition. A celebration of the contemporary UK art scene curated by Charles Saatchi.

Perhaps best known for his patronage and promotion of the Young British Artist movement which made stars of Damien Hirst, Gavin Turk, Tracey Emin and Jake and Dinos Chapman and controversial collections like 1997 “Sensations” Saatchi is the most influential art collector in the world. When he starts buying works by an artist or movement the art world sits up, takes notice and does the same. Although sadly for some artists when he starts selling their works their career never recovers.

There has been a lot of anticipation for this show with many hoping it will have the same effect on the current crop of contemporary UK artists including Pablo Bronstein, William Daniels, Matthew Darbyshire, Anne Hardy, Alastair Mackinven, Clunie Reid and Fergal Stapleton. However many commentators have also suggested that whilst Saatchi has spent the last few years focusing more on modern works from China, the Middle East, America and India, the British art scene has moved on with the most interesting and relevant work now comes from video installations and the digital art world, two mediums which Saatchi is famously reticent to collect.

The History Of The Saatchi Gallery showcases the diverse work of over 150 artists from the Saatchi Gallery’s most famous exhibitions including Jake and Dinos Chapman, Lucian Freud, Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol and many more. With over 850 pages each measuring 50cm square and weighing over 35 kilos. The Saatchi Opus is presented in a specially designed inlaid wooden art crate, as an exclusive limited edition of 950 copies each individually numbered and personally signed by Charles Saatchi himself. Abstract America: New Painting And Sculpture

The Saatchi Gallery in London is currently holding an exhibition entitled Abstract America: New Painting and Sculpture. Consisting of more than thirty artists, most of which are from Los Angeles or New York, have never been shown in the United Kingdom. Francesco DiMattio and Gedi Sibony, Aaron Young and Agathe Snow from New York, Guerra de la Paz from Miami, and Mark Grotjahn and Sterling Ruby from Los Angeles are all celebrated for their new ideas and movements within the abstract art world. Abstarct America: New Painting and Sculpture at Saatchi Gallery is a huge exhibition which presents the works of a radical new generation of American abstract painters, whose works cross between fresh cultural expression and postmodernist mix ups. Featuring Dan Colen, Joe Bradley, Jedediah Caesar, Patrick Hill, Matt Johnson, and many more artits the show is set to run to the 13th September 09. The Saatchi has also published the Abstract America Catalogue, an amazing book in relation with the show.

Since 1985 The Saatchi Gallery has presented an ever-changing view of contemporary art from all over the world and has had a profound influence on how contemporary art is perceived significantly raising its profile. For the first time a book provides a rare opportunity for one to own the Saatchi gallery in a book titled ”The History of the Saatchi Gallery“, which chronicles the breadth of work exhibited at The Saatchi Gallery over the past two decades from Lucian Freud to Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol to Zhang Xiaogang. The book is divided into seven sections, each reflecting different aspects of the work which has been exhibited over the last twenty years, including the Infamous Sensation and controversial British Young Artists , as well as The Triumph of Painting and New Chinese Art. The text includes essays by leading art critics Richard Cork and Brian Sewell, Sir Norman Rosenthal, former Secretary of Exhibitions at The Royal Academy of Art, and actor Steve Martin.

Scheduled to be published in February 2009, the 850 page book comes cased in a Inlaid wooden art crate, Each of the 950 coplies individually numbered and signed by Charles Saatchi himself. The pre-order price is set at US$3,650, while the normal price is at US$4,200 both prices including worldwide delivery. Weighing in a 40kgs you know this book is serious business. Considering the amount of influential art work that is presented in the book and the costs associated with the real works, this book in my opinion is definitely worth the investment.
