“Paved with Good Intentions” at Gallery Reis is Scott Campbell’s first solo show in Asia. While we have just a few preview images on hand we can see the show will be signature in Campbell’s style, taking iconic Tattoo culture imagery and working with American currency to create depth and meaning. The exhibition starts January 13 and will run through February 29, 2012.

Opening on January 25, this latest installation from Scott Campbell promises to make for a must see with the New York based artist showcasing his work in Europe for the first time. With Galerie Gmurzynska’s Zurich location hosting Campbell, and following the recently seen fuse painting technique we witnessed, I would not be surprised if this is a large part of the body of works that will surface for the exhibition.

During the Karl Lagerfeld Pirelli calendar launch in Moscow, Renato Montagner, Creative Director of Pirelli P Zero, commissioned artist Scott Campbell to create two signature projects. To engrave a Pirelli tire and to design a special edition P Zero bike jacket by Dainese. In the summer of 2011, Campbell began working on these pieces in his Brooklyn studio in New York.

Documentary filmmaker Casey Neistat has been all over the internet lately and has now teamed with one of our favorites, Scott Campbell, to produce, an interest albeit we don’t encourage you to attempt, film. In this latest piece Scott is shown exhibiting his inner Macgyver, scavenging New York seeking supplies to build an makeshift “prison” tattoo gun. The video cumulates with Scott bestowing Casey with his own prison tattoo in the middle of Tompkins Square Park, dangerously brilliant.

Here is a fascinating group exhibition with work from Scott Campbell, Raymond Pettibon and the late Steven Parrino making for a compelling body of works. The eclectic mix of names are combined to great effect on the walls of Marc Jancou Contemporary. Each providing there signature work with Campbell working on both his renowned bank notes and Ostrich eggs making for a great alternative of mediums, while Pattibon and Parrino’s works are taken from their archive.

Marc Jancou Contemporary presents their latest exhibition entitled “Blankness is Not a Void,” featuring works by the the talented Scott Campbell, Steven Parrino and Raymond Pettibon. The exhibition is a “starting point the dialogue between Campbell’s contemporary creations, Pettibon’s 1980s Punk Rock imagery and the Romantic, mannered works on paper of Parrino, the show encourages viewers to re-evaluate American “low” culture by considering the commonalities among these particular artists’ chosen content and use of materials.” The exhibition utilises this conversation to explore the universal ideas of death, love and sex.

Exhibition opens at the Marc Jancou Contemporary Gallery on 29th April and runs until June 4th.

OHWOW Los Angeles kicked things off in a huge way Saturday night with the Miami-based operation’s maiden exhibition which saw the opening of the highly anticipated “Noblesse Oblige” by SlamxHype favorite, Scott Campbell. Campbell assembled a dazzling array of works mainly comprised of pieces created out of uncut sheets of US currency, in addition to the utilization of other unique materials such as ostrich eggs, copper and black lights. Heavy tattoo themes are present throughout the works, along with some pop culture references that definitely need to be seen in person to fully appreciate. This show is a must see if you are in the Southern California region.

Expanding on his use of currency as a medium, one piece in the show (image above)  uses over $5,000 worth of uncut currency sheets to create an over two-foot cube, of which Campbell has carved a three dimensional skull.

OHWOW inaugurates its Los Angeles gallery with a solo exhibition of recent work by New York based artist Scott Campbell. In Campbell’s West Coast debut, Noblesse Oblige, he uses copper, currency, graphite, ink, and neon, to transform tattoo subculture iconography into delicate and tempered work.

Campbell expands his use of cut currency, sourcing uncut sheets of dollars directly from the United States Mint, to create large, intricate work with a sunken relief effect. One piece uses $5,000 worth of currency sheets to create an over two-foot cube, into which a three dimensional skull is carved-out. These works employ the familiar blue-collar vernacular of tattoo flash-boards – a skull smoking a cigarette, a skeleton’s hand in a provocative gesture, a single eye emitting a penetrating ray – and highlight the irony that exists within that imagery.

Noblesse Oblige also includes a suite of prints. Using a tattoo gun, Campbell has engraved a collection of copper plates to make a group of etchings. By using the same plates to compose the separate prints, the artist plays with visual semantics – how meaning changes through arrangement. A series of drawings, executed onto the interior of ostrich eggshells, also flirt with interpretation. Morbid images, rendered in graphite onto these fragile surfaces that represent birth and transformation, point out the delicacy of opposition.

The title Noblesse Oblige implies that whoever claims to be noble must conduct their life accordingly, and in a manner that conforms to one’s position. In Campbell’s case, his “nobility” is his tattoo-artist origin, and it is to that position and reputation his compliance is fashioned. In exhibiting a chronicle of working class imagery, customarily inked onto skin, Campbell seeks to construct a new context for the genre – an alternative narrative for consideration.
