Space Invader, a pioneer of the new generation of street artists has made his impression made all over the world both on the streets and in the gallery scene. This latest installation at La Générale in Paris entitled “INVADER 1000″ coincides with the artist erecting his 1000th mosaic, fittingly in his home city. This body of works includes an assortment of mediums from photographs, stickers, installations and even a Speed Ball machine.

According to a report in the L.A. Times, legendary street artist Space Invader was detained in Los Angeles last Friday. Invader, known for his colorful mosaics inspired by the classic arcade game from which he takes his name, is believed to have been one of two French nationals detained by the LAPD on suspicion of vandalism. A cousin of Thierry Guetta, aka Mr. Brainwash, Space Invader is a French citizen who keeps his identity secret, pixellating his face in video footage and photography.

The police claim to have caught the two taggers near Los Angeles MOCA in Little Tokyo, hanging out by a historic building with buckets of grout and some tile pieces. The duo have been released while the investigation continues, but a police spokesman said that after they were let go, Invader’s trademark mosaics were discovered attached to several other buildings, including MOCA’s Geffen Contemporary.

MOCA, of course, is hosting the epic street art celebration “Art in the Streets,” which features numerous works by Space Invader (the museum is even selling Space Invader keychains for $7). The artist’s personal Web site, meanwhile, features a digital floor plan of MOCA’s space, evidently illustrating the locations of Invader pieces placed placed around the exhibition. Clicking on the icons on the map opens a video that seems to show the artist placing one of his blue-tiled mosaics somewhere in the scaffolding above the “Art in the Street” galleries, as security guards walk by beneath.

Space Invader gives us a look at how his mosaic tile artworks are created and put on the streets. His tile artworks have been spotted on the streets of metropolis cities all around the world- all of which are a part of his on-going global invasion endeavor that began over a decade ago in the early 90’s.

The video was taken in November 09 while he was in London for LAzaride’s Grifters exhibition (Which is still on exhibit till the 16th of January), Invader talks us through his process, from cement to numbering to marking the location on his iPhone. The piece shown is titled LDN 116 (the 116th piece in London). A great look into the creation process of these artworks, and a bit of commentary on the side giving insight into the thoughts and ideas of the Parisian artist.  Take a look below.

Yevgeniy: How should i address you and please introduce yourself.

Invader: I am Invader from space-invaders.com.

Yevgeniy:Have you heard about Galaga 2 video game?

Invader: No I don’t know about Galaga 2.

Yevgeniy:Good, no one should know about it. What is your favorite city to invade and one to relax if you do so?

Invader: Since I’m doing my city invasions I do not relax anymore when I’m traveling. I just Invade! The Kathmandu and Indian invasions I did a few month ago were maybe my favorite ones because it was like invading another planet.

Yevgeniy:Various people find your tile invaders and then take them down for their collections or even for sale. What is your take on that?

Invader: I would recommend they buy tiles in a tile store because they would have a better result with no broken tiles.

Yevgeniy – That’s true. Over the years one of my favorite tiles in LA is the one on La Cienega / Wilshire in the middle of the road. It’s been taken down and then put up again various times. Are you planning to put it back up again?

Invader – Yes, there was a car accident there and then the pillar with the piece on it was moved by the city.  When a piece disappears I sometimes put it back; the exact same piece at the exact same spot.

Yevgeniy – What is the biggest and the smallest Space Invader tiles?

Invader – The biggest I ever did with tiles is on Melrose, It is still there but a bit hidden by trees.  The smallest were made with micro mosaic tiles, and I put some like that in several cities.

Yevgeniy – With so many artists these days take on commercial work. Have you been asked or doing something like that?

Invader – I have been asked many times, but I have not done it yet.   I wait for a good opportunity, to do it with a company I like and in a coherent way.

Yevgeniy – Thank you for the honest answer.What sort of your art work can we expect at “Insiders, Outsiders & The Middle” exhibition?

Invader – I have presented 4 different pieces showing the different aspects of my recent works, there is a QR code (new generation of barcode that you can read with a mobile phone) made with tiles, a Dalai Lama Rubik cubist portrait made with Chinese Rcubes, an Invaded road sign and a cardboard sculpture.

Yevgeniy – Got to ask an obligatory question here. What is next for you?

Invader – I’m working on several projects and shows coming soon, like the invasion of a museum in Europe, but I generally don’t speak about my projects and invasions to come before having done them, stay tuned ….
